iPod Touch 4th Gen: Simplistic Review

Widdy’s Review of the iPod Touch 4th Gen

As many of you already know, Apple has come out with a slew of new and shiny things for people to blow their money on. I admit that I am quite pleased with this purchase and have no qualms about sharing my elation in this review. Before I get into the meat of this review, I would like to put on this disclaimer: this is not a review on the very technical features and specs of the newest ipod, it is simply my opinions and observations as an owner.

Screen:
There was quite a bit of speculation on this particular aspect of the new ipod. At the Apple convention Steve Jobs said that they would be exactly the same as the iphone 4. The truth is that they are not quite the same. On a good note, the retina display is utterly fantastic. Each individual icon is SO clear! Even under a magnifying glass the lines are quite crisp. The main difference is the acceptable viewing angle. If you look from the side, the screen gets washed out just like the older versions of the ipod touch. Unless you show people videos on your ipod I don’t really think of this as a huge problem.

*the one on the right is the ipod 4th gen (see the washed out appearance )

*It's a tad hard to see in this picture (because of the limitations of my camera) but the pixels on the new ipod are unbelievably small and the images are so crisp.

Size:
It is only a bit smaller than the older ipod touch generations. It still has the same rounded edges and is a bit slimmer. The size difference is just enough that my old cases are loose on it.

Face Time:
Not going to lie… this is an awesome feature. I bought my husband an ipod just so that we could talk to each other while he’s at school. We’ve tried it out a few times and it is a nice little perk.

Camera/Video:
The camera is nice, but not as nice as I thought it would be. It takes decent pictures outside, but pictures taken inside are grainy (not having a flash makes this particular aspect worse). All in all it won’t replace your regular camera, but it takes good enough pictures for facebook or those times you don’t carry around a camera. The video, by the same token, is wonderful outside but grainy inside. Once again this is to be expected. If you don’t have a video camera, then this will surely be a step up (much better than video functions on digital cameras).

Game Center:
I can’t really review this aspect because I don’t have the right games or anyone to play with (sniff). I suppose that it would be pretty cool to play with your friends.

Multitask:
Yay! Finally you can do multiple things on the ipod. What’s that, you needed to check your calendar in the middle of writing an email? No problem. If you double click the home button (circle-button) then it brings up the apps that you have used recently and it takes you right back to where you were.

Other:
You can now have a background behind your apps. A simple customizable feature that makes it feel more individual.

In conclusion, the new ipod touch 4th generation is a great product. It may not be quite as revolutionary as it was made out to be, but the new features are nice enough to justify the purchase. I would recommend it to anybody!

Is there a difference in contrast? I mean, if you put a solid black screen on both, is the now one noticeably darker when at the same brightness?

Nice review.

I'm enjoying mine. Coming from a second gen iPod Touch, the differences aren't AMAZING but it is a nice refresh. The screen resolution definitely makes it jump up a notch in web browsing.

Judging by the pictures, the new ipod touch looks worse to me??

Washed out and dimmer in contrast to the old one.

Might be sharper, but the colour looks worse

Retina Display is amazing. Coming from the resolution of the older Gen is a huge step.

I was thinking about picking one up but figured my Samsung Captivate and my Nano are more than enough. I don't need to carry around 2 bricks everyday to do what my brick and pebble can already do

I think it's just the viewing angle [which doesn't look great at all] and camera. But if you're comparing it to an iPhone 4, then it indeed does look a bit worse.
