Thread Starter
most of the "laymen" or non-computer-experts would probably be better served by using Steam Mover since it makes it really easy.

What steam mover does at the file system level is described in the OP... so if you're interested in how your file system actually works, Link Shell Extension is still useful, even if you use Steam Mover to do the work for you.

is there a way to have this work from a network drive as i have gigabit ethernet and a raid 5 array that i'm trying to get the steam directory onto. but i keep getting an error:
Location not available
C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Steam\\Steamapps is not accessible.
The data present in the reparse point buffer is invalid

If i navigate to the destination/junction i can see the data in there i just spent 12 hours terra copying the files from my laptop drive to this network drive. Now i cant use it.

Hey, I've finally got myself a SSD, so I naturally had to try this, but I didn't get a performance boost at all with Civ5. Can't believe that game, it's so slow. Never ever finished it to this day, I just give up. Don't think it's my system... I got Radeon HD 7970m, 16GB DDR3 and now SSD.

Will try another game too...

Hi and welcome to OCN smile.gif

Civ5 would most likely be held back by your CPU, as it's very heavy CPU game smile.gif

Me, I still cheat and use Steam Mover to move my games biggrin.gif
There's a link to it in my Sig! (SSD owners must have app)
Plus a link to "How to put you Rig in your Sig" if you was wanting to know how thumb.gif

CPU demanding ey? Hmm, that's disappointing... Everyone told me it was about the RAM as I've never had above 4GB before... Oh well... There are many things that could be wrong with the game in my particular case though, as I won't play it without mods, and it almost always crash on me at some point. Haven't had time to troubleshoot it yet, and they're all essential mods tongue.gif

I do have i7 3610QM 2.3GHz though. Although it's a laptop processor I would think it should be sufficient shouldn't it? I did after all manage to play it on a three year old laptop too, although I stayed away from large and up maps...

But I have a question about the Steam junction setup too. Before researching this option with creating junctions, I installed Steam on my hdd (which has got the real estate) before having the epiphany that maybe the potential of the ssd were wasting away on me. Is it better to install Steam on the SSD, and then move games that doesn't need to be on the ssd over to the hdd, or does it make no difference to leave it as it is (the other way around)?
