CPU temps/cooling advice

Thread Starter
Currently I have my CPU running at ~29C idle, ~45C while playing FEAR. What kind of temps can I expect if OC'd and how can I keep it down. I'd like to buy water cooling but can't afford it right now... I've already got AS5 and 2 case fans. A Big Typhoon wont fit in my case (actually it will but it'll be right next to the side panel so it wont be getting any air). how much difference could 2 other fans on the front of the case make? It seems that's the only option I have, unless someone can think of something else.

Also, I know the max temp for the Athlon 64 3400+ ClawHammer, but I can't find what temps someone can safely run it at constantly for long periods of time.

you should be good as long as you keep it under 50C on a load. Also the fans you already have... are they exaust or intake?

You could try another intake/exhaust fan. However, you have very decent temps. I have the same proc and my cooling is... Two intake, two exhaust, and a fan control to throttle them up as fast as they'll go. One is a side fan that feeds directly to the cpu fan. I have the same temps as you do currently, which seems to imply... much to my dismay... that your simple air cooling setup is just as good as my complex one.

You mentioned that a Big Typhoon wouldn't fit in your case. Have you looked into smaller coolers? Something with at least 80% copper, because copper is better at transferring heat. Other than a really great heatsink, you're looking at water cooling. If you don't have huge budget. I suggest checking out..... http://www.ninjalane.com/display.aspx?docname=aquamini . It was in the last Maximum PC. Gets great reviews, and better than a lot of the most popular after market heat sinks. Also, very simply to install. (go with the 120mm) Only about $85.

Best of luck to you.

Side fan is intake, rear fan is exhaust. I had both of them exhaust, cuz that's how the case came, but I switched the side one and it dropped ~4C. Maybe I'll just have to wait til summer to get a job and save for a watercooling kit.

This is how I currently have it, aside from the front fans. That's where they would go if I had them. I also have a HD cooler, blowing down and away from the HD.

*Paint is awesome.

So size is an issue... Definatley add an exhaust and an intake fan to the case, then look into the Zalman 9500 cooler. Its still big but sounds more like it will be great for your particular application, and cools almost as well as the BT.You may alos want to look into the thermal right XP-90c and i high flow fan for it.
