The best dual core to buy....would have to be the Opteron 170. A x10 multi, and all the cache.

But, if you have sweet ram, you could always go for the 165 and save...they all overclock similarly.

That's cool, like let say an OCZ DDR500 PC4000 Gold Gamer eXtreme XTC Edition, would that be good to overclock w/ the 165?

would the opty 175 reach higher overclock than the 165 ? , like 2.8 2.9 ?
im trying to decide if i go with whatever x2 3800 4800 etc. or go with an opty , i do need to reach around 2.8 more or less so that i can run a 2 gig set of ocz ddr500 1:1 at 270fsb i don't even know if with any of the dual cores is possible , right now im very happy with my amd 3500 venice running it at 260x11 =2860 1:1 which would be my goal with a dual core !!

any sugestions ?

Wait!!! You are saying that it owns the 3800+? Stock, the x2 3800+ is performs better! I know you aren't counting on one out overclocking the other, after you were flaming in another thread about saying how stupid it is for one to expect overclocks !

Definitely don't expect an overclock that high with any of the dual cores mentioned above, it's possible, but not probable, stabily, on air. If you intend to game, then you may actually lose a little performance switching to a dual core that can't reach as high of clock speeds. And like you suspected, many suspect that the memory controllers of amd dual core chips get overstressed trying to run high htts with two cores. But, as the consensus seems to be, if you are set on dual core, go with the opty 165. Their steppings have been overclocking as well as the 170s and and 175s, making the latter two not worth the extra cost.

I second euraman. I managed to EASILY clock my X2 3800 to 2650, with only raising voltage from 1.400 to 1.4125 and running stable, runnin prince of presia, quake 4 and other games on it. so think about it, the opteron may be able to overclock about 100 or 200 mhz more than the X2 but not by far. And if you put the extreme cooling in the equasion then well, I am 100% positive I can hit 3GHZ on water with this one.
I was able to run 2850mhz "almost" stable on this one at 1.435volts and 60 temp off-load, I didnt want to go further cause I'm on stock cooling.

I agree. At the time of my 170 Opteron purchase there were no 165's to be found and I was tired of waiting. I don't agree that the X2 3800 was as healthy a processor (for my testing) as the Opteron. I tested both and found the Opteron more robust and held the o/c better/cooler. I tested 3 3800's and 2 Opteron 170's.

Had there been any 165's around I would have gone with one of them instead. That being said, one can not easily expect single core overclocks with dual core processors with all things being considered equal in the system other than the processor.

WHOA WHOA WHOA!!!
I was NOT flaming. I never said it would overclock higher in the least! The facts are, the average overclocks are probably VERY similar. BUT...yes BUT, the 165 has double the cache. I would know from experience here...that more cache does help in a lot of different areas in small ways.
Please do not try to argue with me saying that I said something I never said. Thank you.

Here is a point some miss.
The added cache equates to more performance. So if you had the exact same OC of an X2 w/2x512 cache as an Opteron or X2 with 2x1024 cache, the X2 and Opterons cache would actually perform better then the the X2s w/2x512 cache at the same operating speed provided the cores themself were exactically equals and the same system was used!
I think I covered all the varables

That's basically what I was sayin. Nice way to put it.

You can overclock, but you can't glue on cache
