Opteron 144 DEAD? or PSU

Thread Starter
Been doing a bit of overclocking past few days, Opteron running at 2.8Ghz with no problems (although it would never boot at that speed, have to boot at 2.1Ghz then manually up it to 2.8Ghz using Clockgen.exe) CPU been running cool though 30°C idle 48°C loaded. It's probably worth pointing out that it's been running at 2.16Ghz for 2 months 2 days at 2.7Ghz and 1 day (yesterday) at 2.8Ghz.

Anyway, today I installed a new 550W PSU and my new Saphire 1900XT. Played Oblivion maxed out for ~2 hours, hit msn for 30 mins and PC died on me, rebooting casued it to die in less than 30 seconds. By 'died' I mean it powered off as if there was a power cut.

So I then tried my old 450W PSU and the same thing happened after 3 hours of play this time before death heaven set in.

I thought it was the GFX card so I replaced it with my old one (Saphire GTO2) and 2-3 hours later it died again. Then it wouldn't post so I think that PSU's dead because I swapped it for the newer 550W PSU and it posted - but died again shortly after.

I tried disconnecting everything inside (3 hardrive, DVD, 2 case lights and a Fan) but still the problem persists. I can't see the memory causing this sort of problem as I'd expect the Blue Screen of Death for memory issues.

The mother board!? I dont see it as it causing this problem - although I may be wrong.

I'm thinking my CPU may be playing up, is this sort of issue symptomatic with a damaged CPU>>>??? Any guidance greatly appreciated.

I've got another PC I can swap bits with, but I'll wait for any advice before I go pulling things out.

turn down your overclock. How obvious is that? lol. Go back to 2.7 and it should be fine.

I am thinking maybe some heat damage when running at high overclock previously.

A simply check would be to look at the colour of the die.

cheers

edit: BTW do you get BSOD upon shutdown.

That seems effed up. So you totally reset the CMOS? Voltage and speeds are all back to normal?

Looks OK. What are the chances of it being anything other than the CPU?

Well, you've eliminated the posibility of it being the psu or the video card. You may be shorted or damaged your mobo when doing all the changing. Have you tried your CPU in another PC? Maybe your RAM gave out on you, can you swap some RAM? Last problem would be the cpu, and it just crapped out from the overclock. You'll have to do some swapping to find the problem. If you don't have the parts, ask a friend to borrow his comp for a while. Last resort would be to take it to a computer repair shop and ask them to test the RAM, mobo, and the CPU for problems.
