My Planned Super-Rig

Thread Starter
Ever since i discovered why AMD is 'better' than Intel, I've been wanting to upgrade. So even though i can't currently afford this, this is my plan that I am aiming to build, as i earn some lovely money. (Please don't turn this into an AMD vs Intel battle)

(All parts and prices listed are from Overclockers.co.uk)

CPU: AMD Opteron 165 £260.79

Mobo: Asus A8N32-SLi Deluxe £140.94

RAM: OCZ Platinum EB PC4000 2Gb £234.94 (Thanks Mr-P!)

Case: ThermalTake Armour Silver £117.44

PSU: Enermax Noisetaker 600w £0 (taken from current rig)

OS: Windows XP Home OEM £58.69

CPU HS: Zalman CNPS9500 LED £35.19

TOTAL = £847.99

What kind of OC can i expect with the 165? And another thing thats been puzzling me, is it 1.8Ghz PER CORE, or 1.8Ghz total processing power? If it's 1.8Ghz per core, then does that mean it runs as fast as a 3.6Ghz? (If AMD made a 3.6Ghz). Anything you think needs changing, let me know your thoughts. The PSU will definitely be the Enermax, as i already have it in this rig. When i get my new rig, my old OEM PSU will go back in this PC.

Things im concerned about:
Will the Zalman CNPS9500 be too heavy for that mobo?
Is that mobo easily OC'able?
What HDD should i use, and is RAID 0 easily setup?

I also planned out a possible watercooling setup, although this is merely to give myself and 'average' price. I'm pretty sure if i hunted around I could get a better WC setup. Any feedback on what are the best pumps/resevoirs/cpu blocks etc would be helpful, and what order to put the loop together in. Heres my hypothetical WC setup:

CPU Block: Swiftech Apogee £30.49

Pump: Swiftech MCP350 £48.47

Radiator: Swiftech MCR120-QP-B £17.57

Tubing: Waterchill 10mm £3.47/m

Resevoir: Swiftech MCRES-Micro £11.46

TOTAL: £114.93

One thing about this setup, is where could I get the barbs that attach to the res? baring in mind that I'm in the UK.
Also, before anyone says "get a '77 bonneville heatercore", i can't/won't because:
I'm in the UK so its not readily available, and I dont want to have to mess around trying to make a cowl for it and attach fans etc. I'd much rather have a purpose-built radiator that can fit to a 120mm fan space INSIDE the case, with the fan blowing from air from inside, through it, out of the case. I was considering maybe using a dual 120mm radiator fitted externally on the back of the case, as this particular case has holes especially for running WC tubing out the back to a radiator.

This WC setup is based around 3/8" parts. Is there a way I could use the MCP655 (1/2") with a 3/8" CPU block?
EDIT: just noticed that the Apogee comes with fittings for either 3/8" OR 1/2". But the Radiator still has built in 3/8" barbs.
EDIT2: The dual 120 radiator has threads for putting on different sized barbs but where can i but threaded barbs?

Please give me your thoughs. (This rig will not be built for some time, as i need to save up the cash first )

In a thread that explained why AMD Mhz are better than Intel Mhz (AMD 9 ops per clock - Intel 6 ops per clock)

Please don't take this thread off topic so early on

I've just noticed that the WC setup mentioned with a dual 120mm fan radiator is basically the same as this kit:

That was my thread *feels helpful*

Dont forget that AMD's have onboard memory controllers and lower L1 and L2 latencys.

Anyway, that water cooling setup looks pretty good - it should be a nice addition to the Opty. 3ghz or more should be within easy reach. Personally, I would custom build it instead of buying a kit. That way you get the experiance and you know if anything goes wrong, wheather it was human error or manufacturing errors.
