What I am going for here is an improvement using the stock heatsink... since going aftermarket looks to be extremely painful.
How about buying two 80mm or 92mm fans and sticking them on the stock heatsink instead? This way you also blow air directly onto the vrm's.

Would really be interested to see how your idea would work though. Hopefully you'll post some numbers around here so we can see the results!

We have different cards but I did this except I didn't install heatsinks. I have a 120mm fan tied to stock heatsink with cable ties. I did it because my stock fan had a high-pitch whine that drove me nuts, not really to get better cooling as it cooled OK enough for me anyway. However, running the 120mm fan at full speed has knocked off about 10c, I tested it the other day and it would go no higher than 59c on Furmark, pretty sure it would reach 70c previously at similar ambient temps. I am using a Xilence Red Wing fan and it is pretty damn quiet at full speed and I lower it to 5v when not gaming. A 120mm fan is gonna blow all over the vrm's anyway, I would have thought. And best of all for me, no more high pitch whine.

I was gonna try that but due to the shape of the heatsink a single fan was easier. The heatsink has a big recess for the stock fan to sit in and the 120mm fan covers this, dunno about the shape of the heatsink on the Sonic though.

I ordered up the heatsinks and thermal adhesive I need to give this a shot. I will do a build log with pics on this little project. I am going to also try and get my Thermalright 140mm fan attached to this heatsink.

It might be fun....

A pic of what? The card or Furmark? Bit of a hassle taking the card out if it's the card you want but I could do it.

I just ran Furmark again and I forgot that when I got the 59c I was running at .9 vcore at 800/1900, it gets up to about 10c higher running at .95 vcore at 850/1960. Sorry about that, I honestly just forgot that I run undervolted these days, I have MSI afterburner apply the settings at Windows start up.

I am running at 1680x1050 with 8x MSAA (.95 vcore at 850/1960) right now as I type and I am getting 68c.

Sorry for my English, but since you have installed a V4000 DEEPCOOL on GTX 460 PALIT wanted to ask you a few things.
The fan originally had a 4-pin connector, the V4000 also? If it is not as you've connected the fans DEEPCOOL.
The fans are noisy at full speed from the original?
Many thanks

Parts arrived today. With any luck, I will get this done tonight.

I am also working on my dad's WoW machine (new 955 quad core, MOSFET cooling for his Biostar mobo and Accelero cooler for his 4850).

Cereal will be a busy guy tonight (after the kids go to bed and I help the wife).

Pics tonight or tomorrow!
