@action3500

It looks good and huge on that REFERENCE MSI card! Wish it would fit on the non-reference cards we have here (1GB) but it doesn't... crap!

Ok, guys, the 560 Ti Sonic 1GB uses the same layout as the 460 1gb. I'm gonna get the deep cool v4000. How much better is it than the stock crappy cooler? Can you change the fans on it?

In my case it's about 5-7*C better than the stock fan at load so it's worth it in my opinion.

You can also replace the stock fan by simply removing the shroud. The shroud houses the 2x80mm fans and is just clipped onto the copper fins.

I currently use a couple of 80mm fans that push better cfm and static pressure and Jerry-rigged it with zip ties. It actually came out pretty clean since you can use the screw holes of the fans and tie it in between the copper fins so it doesn't look bad. I can show you pics of it if you wish.

Greetings!

I'm soon to receive a second Palit Geforce GTX460 Sonic (1GB) for my system. The plan is to put this into SLI mode ofcourse. I'm only a bit afraid about the temperatures.

Currently, in idle mode its around 41 degrees, in furmark test 84 degrees with fan at 70 %
I've also OC-ed it yesterday to 850/1700/2200 @ 1.01v and its now reaching 88 degrees with fan at 95%

The thing is, I'm afraid in SLI mode these babies would just get insanly hot, even at stock, as there almost attached to eachother. Do any of the following fit when I put it in SLI mode?

2) Deep Cool v4000 (Available in Asia/Europe) (probably too thick)
7) Scythe Setsugen 2 (Available worldwide) (Not sure)
8) Zerotherm Coolmax 4000 (Available worldwide) (bad availabily here, not sure if it fits)
9) Gelid Icy Vision (With 2nd DVI case removal only?) (not sure
Edit: If I look in the case, the second Palit would become very tight towards the other Palit..

This is the motherboard I'm using, probably also won't fit in the bottom slot as the PSU would be in the way of it..

That should be enough to keep my card from crashing in bc2 and bf3! I'm thinking about replacing the fan too and put two beast fans with a speed controller so that should improve temps even more! I'm worried about the space it will take though, I'd love if you showed some pics of your rig

@iZZ,

I should be able to post some pics in a day or so since I'm tied up with work and need to finish a project up first!

By the way I'm replacing my 80mm fans with 92mm fans (Gelid wing 9 UV Blue) on my GPU together with some fans (2 push/pull Gelid wing 12 UV blue on heatsink and 1 for my exhaust up top), since I plan to do a UV theme for my case.

As soon as I change the fans I'll also post pics of it to show a comparison between an 80 and 92mm fan on the v4000 Deep Cool heatsink.

Out of the 4 you mentioned the zerotherm coolmax I believe is a 2 slot (and the thinnest of the bunch) cooling solution and then the deep cool v4000 would be really more of a 2 1/2 slot solution.

Before buying anything though I would suggest replacing the TIM on your sonic edition and use MX-3 on it. Secondly I think re-seating the heat sink would give you much better temps than what you currently have.

I would also suggest putting mem and vram heatsinks on your Palit as it greatly helps dissipate all that heat.

Please also remember that furmark and kombustor (newest versions) really stress these cards to levels which your card will never hit. Try running graphics intensive games like Crysis or Metro 2033 for an hour and check to see what max temps your cards hit.

To give you an idea I ran my Palit (with my current cooler and ambient @ 25*C) at 900 Mhz in Kombustor and I hit a max of 72*C. I then compared it to running Crysis (played for a good 2 hours) at the max resolution including AA / AF the card would allow and then checked MSI Afterburner for my max temps and guess what the highest the card hit was 63*C.

Planning on replacing the TIM in the coming days, thanks for the tip though, almost forgot to do that. Got some AS5 laying around I believe.

It's just that, I'm already looking at the point where I have the cards in SLI setup, and the air intake is just almost completly shut off for 1 card(atleast so it seems if I imagine a second card in the 2nd slot). Worried about temps a bit for that one..(Low air, heat from the other card radiating into it..)

Sadly, Zerotherms are hard to get here :/

Yesterday I cleaned the card, cleaned the paste, added some new AS5, card is now idle 1-2 degrees lower, but stressed 1-2 higher..

Don't get it, friend of mine has the same card, in a crappy case, but his idles on 30 degrees, stressed 65 degrees...

Another option you might want to look at is have a fan from the side panel blow directly onto the cards to give it that extra cooling. From what I've read in a review (can't remember what site did it) their temps also reached close to 80*C for the card that was not sucking in air cleanly.

As for the AS5 having load temps that are a little higher, once it cures it should be a bit better. By the way what case are you using? Is your case set up for positive air pressure or negative? These things could also help lower down your temps.

Before I forget, don't compare your temps to your buddies since he only has a single card setup. The 460 in SLI does generate a lot of heat and overclcoking it definitely adds more heat to it. I would suggest sticking to 800Mhz for the core clocks for both cards since at that setting they kill a 580 in games. We're you able to add vrm heat sinks and mem heat sinks to your cards? I remember when the platinum sonic engineering sample came out with the heatsinks it was 5*C cooler compared to what they officially launched which had no vrm heatsinks.

Lastly, can you fix your sig so we can have a look at your setup as well?
