60 FPS cap w/vsync on?

Thread Starter
I have aiw radeon 9600xt 128 ram. In counterstrike source I run it in direct x 7 and keep vsync on. I noticed that when i turn vsync off and keep all the other video settings the same, there is a tremendous boost in fps. With vsync on, the fps maxes out at 60. It fluctuates a little below but always pops back to exactly 60 and nothing more. When I turn off vsync the fps will reach over 100 and will fluctuate more and will not have one number that it will always be at. In other words, when vsync is off it appears that my video card is truly pumping out all the frames it can depending on the environment I'm in in the game. When vsync is on it is obvious that the fps is restricted by something because as the environment changes (less detailed) the fps will only stay at 60 or go below 60, never above. You may be thinking that its because i have vsync on and im an idiot for asking, but it is very obvious that the fps is restricted to a max of 60 with vsync on. Is there a setting to allow more fps with vsync on?

A lot of people who play counter-strike who got 60FPS before, can get 100FPS and notice a difference, when I played source with 100FPS, it was SOOOO much smoother, it was great.

Vsync (i believe) changes its CAP depending on what your monitor's refresh rate is set to. I haven't turned vsync on since beucase the only thing vsync does is SYNC's all your frames and makes it so that (if your pc does so) your game won't tear between bottom and top halfs of the screen.

Yup..vsync will make your frames match your monitor/displays refresh rate...

...if your monitor/display can run at high fequency...say 120Hz or greater, than vsync can be used with little to no perceivable difference.

I know it's all preference but there's two things you really should do.

1) Enable DX90 mode
2) Turn off vsync

You will be much happer with that I am sure.

Well the Vsync will cap your FPS at you current refresh rate so if you set it to 60hz then you will get 60fps woth vsync on..If you keep vsync on i reccomend changing your refresh rate to 75hz.

But what happens if the monitor he's got can only do 60hz?
I would just turn off the V-sync and set dx9

Well if his monitor can only do 60hz then yes he will have to turn of vsync if he wishes for smoother gameplay at the cost of some eye candy in game lol.

Good question man. Vsync syncronizes your rate that your monitor refreshes with your fps. Your motherboard is refreshing at 60hz yielding 60fps. Vsync is more a little performance setting for guys with lower line computers. I would recommend running your FPS at around 100, or what ever your average is.

To look at your FPS detailed, type in net_graph 3 and you can see about what your average fps is.
To set an FPS Max, type in FPS_MAX (number)
