It was definitely a diesel, and it had a whopping 170hp. That is whopping for a 1.8L. The article said that they never needed downshift, just put the foot to the floor and let torque do the work.

Oh so it was the older 1.8l TDI's that's pretty impressive. Volkswagen makes some pretty impressive motors. The stock internals on the 12V and 24V VR6 motor are capable of 500+hp with just a head gasket spacer. But the VR6 was originally supposed to be a diesel and then at the last minute was changed to a gas engine so all they changed (supposedly) was the pistons from 17:1 CR to 10:1 CR (IIRC). The rest of the internals are forged. Granted most people still upgrade the rods and pistons after 450hp for a more reliable setup.

I've got the diesel bug as well (not a VW diesel bug, but I have a friend that had one). I want a RWD diesel CAR with a 6 speed manual trans. If you find one in the USA, LMK.

Occasionally you can find a E46 BMW 325d/330d that has been imported by request for customers. Some came with a 6 speed. The Mercedes 300TD Wagon I am looking at is a 4 speed manual biggrin.gif

Your best bet would be to find a diesel Mercedes and convert it to a manual.

I really want to get a M35A2 deuce and half, that is bobbed with a bed on 53" Michelin XZL's. Like this:

It's just too bad that by today's standards, that is way too big to daily drive. Even if it is just 1.5 miles to the bus stop.

So would I. I have only seen one in person before. And every one I see for sale is usually asking way over book value for them because they are diesel. It would probably almost be cheaper and easier just to find a high mileage E46 for cheap, and then swap in the diesel engine. The shipping of the engine from overseas would probably be the most expensive part of the whole situation.

Wow, I sparked a whole car conversation! OK, so here's the details on mine (sorry, I'm a huge Honda geek, I used to be a tuner, before I got into tuning computers). The old car was a 2008 Honda Civic Si. It didn't have any real mechanical problems, actually the motor ran like mad and it handled like a dream. It was a blast to drive and honestly if it didn't have all the little issues I would have loved to keep it. Basically, I found out after I bought the car that it had been used for different types of racing (autocross and drag, not absolutely sure, but I have a pretty good idea it was anyway) and the entire interior had been taken out of the car at one point in time. Because of this, when they put the interior back in the car, most of it wasn't put in correctly and EVERYTHING rattled. Of course, I didn't know all of this when I bought it, I just knew that it was low miles and drove great. The rattles didn't actually start until about a month after I bought the car, I bought it as a certified used car from Honda, so I took it into the dealer and when they tried to fix it, they told me that the interior had been removed and was not put back together correctly, and many of the clips that hold the interior parts on had been broken off. After 3 trips to the service department (thank god all were covered under warranty) I finally had enough, so I decided I was just going to wait until the end of the year and then get a new car. Then, I had a belt break in one of the tires and it started shaking really bad, so I decided to move up my timeline and just buy a new car.

So, the new car is a 2008 Honda Accord EX-L. I had my sporty car, now I wanted a luxury car to drive, and being a Honda whore, this was it. The EX-L is the top of the line for the Accord, so it has all the bells and whistles (heated leather seats, dual zone climate control, 6 disk in-dash CD player, heated mirrors, etc). It drives smooth as glass, has NO rattles and is actually big enough for me (at 6 foot 330 lbs) to sit in the back seat without having my legs crammed into the back of the front seats. This morning was the first ride to work I've had without listening to something rattle in over a year! I'm so stoked!! Anyway, I'll try to post a pic or two whenever I get around to taking them.

I know how you feel about rattles. MK4 Golf's and Jetta's are notorious for rattles. Well My old 2001 GTI I had, I went through the entire interior, added some dynamat where it was needed and I took care of every creak and rattle. Then about a year later I get hit by a guy attempting to make a right hand turn from the left lane (lucky me, I was in the right lane). It was horrible, every creak came back. I was so sad at that point I lost all hope for the car and parted it out. Then drove it mostly stock for another 1.5 years, finally I got t-boned by a dumb blonde texting and running stop signs, thankfully they totaled it for me that time.
