I just bit the bullet on my new rig.

Ordered a couple AP-15's, and one of these:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112326
Still planning on doing the koolance drop in rad kit on it - it's a nearly ideal case for the mod.

Hey guys,

When AMD specifies that the max temp on their chips is 62 degC, do they mean core or socket temps? I.e. what is read by PC probe (socket) or core temp (core), under load they are different by about 10 degC?

Know i'm not part of the team no more but thought i'd try here before posting a thread.

My understanding is that those are IHS/package temps, NOT core (actual junction) temps - intel often has similar numbers if you look at package temps.

Otherwise, the thermal performance of anything for an AMD chip would have to be far superior to those for intel chips given the TDP numbers for both, and the math just doesn't work out.

For example, my Q6700:
http://ark.intel.com/products/30790/Intel-Core2-Quad-Processor-Q6700-%288M-Cache-2_66-GHz-1066-MHz-FSB%29
Package Specifications TCASE 62.2°C

I think it's because YOU can't measure the internal temps of the CPU, but you could measure the surface temp of an IHS while it's running - and if you're designing a cooling system, numbers you can actually measure are much more useful than magical numbers that come from a sealed system you can't verify.

Something that I just found that has helped with my GPU stability on my main rig that may be helpful to the group. I was having problems with one of the cards constantly failing WU's, it would return NAN's Detected constantly, well on a whim I went into the BIOS and upped the PCIe freq to 101Mhz not enough to cause any problems just enough to see if the extra bandwidth might help. Well so far the card is working fine.

Also I added the GPU to HFM on my dedicated Linux Folding rig so while the only points that should count for the team are the SMP WU's my HFM client data will also have a GPU on there. This just makes it easier for me to see what the box is doing PPD wise.

Ska, I'd love to help you, but I'm not sure about that myself. However, eventhough you are not part of the team any longer, you are one of our retired members and as such, at least in my mind, you're still a teammate, so please don't hesitate to post up here, we're still going to try to help you the best we can!

On a different note, I am not having a good folding month thus far... It started out great, dropping a 6903 at about 1:30 AM on 01/01/12, then I picked up a 6901 (only 30k PPD vs 50k+ I can get off a 6903) then when that finished this morning I got a 6904, which dispite my bump in OC and shutting EVERYTHING else down on my system is still showing a TPF of 1h 20m 19s! In order to get bonus points, I have to have a TPF of under 1h 20m! So close, dang it!! sozo.gif Right now, after only 1% complete, it is showing that it will finish 5 minutes after deadline! 5 MINUTES!!! Dang it!! I'll keep an eye on it and see if there is anything I can do, but for right now, it looks like I'll spend 3 days folding one WU and only net 31k points off it. sozo.gif

EDIT: OK, so I just had an idea and I need someone (probably Awesome) to help me with this. I was thinking, if I take an extra HDD that I have lying around, use another computer to install Ubuntu and the folding client on it (another computer so that my rig is still folding the 6904 WU to loose as little time as possible), then put save the WU from my VM on an external drive, drop the HDD into my SigRig so it is running Ubuntu native and then put the WU on that, it should save me enough time to finish the 6904 on time. So now the question is, will it work? Anyone have any ideas? thinking.gif

EDIT 2: Another Idea just hit me, is there anyway to clone a VM as an actually disk image (like using Clozezilla to copy a HDD to a larger HDD), that way I could just "clone" it onto the new HDD and run Ubuntu native?

I don't know much about Linux n that but in theory it should work because all you need is the work folder and queue.dat to start folding the original WU. When I was switching computers once, someone posted that you couldn't install an OS on one system and HD, remove the HD and put into another system (new mobo needed fresh install was the theory) but I am pretty sure I have since done without realising and had no problems. This was with Windows though so it might not apply.

In theory yes this should work. Like Ska said, you only need the client and the dat files to resume work on a WU.

As for this, I am not so sure it will work that way. If this is faster and easier for you then you could always try it and see what happens, and if it doesn't work, then just wipe the drive and try the other way.

Also on a side note, I think my GPU OC may still be unstable. My computer restarted over the weekend and turns out I forgot to put my GPU client in my start up folder. doh.gif Hopefully I can get this thing stable and ready.

I've done something similar. You can do this but make sure you upload it with the VM, it needs to be submitted from the same machine that received it to get bonus (not positive it won't give you bonus if you would upload from the native though). Configure the client so that it has to ask each time it wants to connect.

I've also installed an OS on one computer (totally different components) and just moved the HDD to another machine which worked great, you might have to restart once or twice but maybe not even that.
