Well, I installed the AP-30s last night and my first thought was 'Holy crap these things are loud!' But they do move a TON of air! I have them hooked up to my fan controller, so if I turn them down to 3/4 speed, the noise is fine, but at max they are LOUD! I don't know about temps yet, I'm letting them run today at full go to see what they do and I'll report back later, but they have to be better than the stock fans that came with the RASA kit. With those, my 2700k hit a max temp (hottest core) of 81C (that was with both my GPUs folding as well, which really heats up my case. I'll take a look at the temps when I get home and report back.

Anyway, happy folding!

Okay guys. Gonna be going down for the last time as a Quad Core unless I can get something up before the end of May, it was fun while it lasted. Thank you for having me an I'll be round to keep an eye out JIC I can get another system built to fold a quad for. smile.gif

The i5 is running smooth. I'm going to shut it down for a couple of days after it finishes the 6904 it is working on, fire it back up for the CC, but give it a little bit of a rest. Other than that, it is running well.

Also, chuck, just want to make sure you were good to go to take your spot back for June? If you need more time to get everything sorted, we have all of May, but let me know if I can switch my i7 back to the other passkey. Thanks, sir.

Have a good one, all!

My system is folding well and I should be able to take over my possition in June. Will take this month to finish tweaking everything to get it in tip top condition. Here is where everything came from and where I am now.

Pre-rebuild:
Ubuntu 10 x64 F@H v6 TPF 6903 ~46min @ 5.1 Ghz ~70°c
4x 140mm fans in push pull on a 280mm Rad running 3/8" ID Tube through an EK HF CPU Block. I had a Topped DDC pump pushing all the water.
P8Z8-V MB - Air Cooled

After rebuild:
Ubuntu 12.04 (Unity removed, recompiled my own v 3.3 kernel with latest BFS scheduler) F@H v7 TPF 6903 ~47min @ 5.1 Ghz ~60°c
3x 120mm AP-31's (5400RPM) shrouded push through a Black Ice GTX Extreme 360mm Rad running 1/2" ID Tube through a Koolance 360 CPU cooler. Fully modded D5 pushing the water, waiting on high volt controler board to push even more water.
Maximus IV Gene - Water cooled vRegs

I may mess around with the Kernel somemore to see if I can get some more performance out of it. Honestly though I'm very pleased with the performance I'm seeing with this one. However last night was the first time that I'm tried my hand at compiling my own Kernel. It is the latest stable release and so far working great. I did patch it with the latest BFS scheduler.

If anyone wants the Kernel let me know I can upload it to Dropbox and make it avaliable.

Sounds good, sir, glad to hear everything is working well! I have a couple of questions...First off, I would be interested in the Kernel to try it on my 2500k to see if I could pick up any additional PPD (always looking for an edge!) and second, how loud are those AP-31s? I just put 2 AP-30s on my rad and when I have them turned up full blast (which through my fan controller I can only get 3890 RPMs) they are LOUD AS HELL! I can't imagine how the 31s sound!

I have to say, though, when at full blast, the AP-30s do lower my temps by about 4C over the stock RASA fans, which is nice. What is even nicer, though, is when I turn them down to about 2500 RPMs, they are quieter than the RASA fans and hold about 1C lower temps, so I'm very happy with them. Now I just need to save up the money for an 360mm SR1 to mount to the back of my case and I'll be golden!

Anyway, we have all month before we would need to switch back, so take your time, finish your tweeking and make sure everything is running well and then let me know and I'll have BWG swap you back in.

I did a PWM mod on my AP-31's so the fan speed is based off of the CPU temps. They are very loud while folding but they only run around 3k on average. When the computer boots and the fans spool up to full speed it sounds like a vacuum cleaner but while folding at 3k RPM they don't sound that bad.

I will post the kernel on my dropbox and post a link here tonight.

I can tell you before I built the kernel my TPF on the 6903 was @ ~56min I loaded up the new kernel this morning and so far my TPF is down to ~46min on the same WU. While TPF's do fluctuate while folding they don't by ~10min. So I think this kernel is a vast improvement. I think there may be some room to tweak it a little more but I'm hesitant to make too many changes since it is working so well right now.

Also with F@H v7 I don't think I need the corehack to get the bigadv WU's. I wasn't getting them until I told the client to use 12 cores. The nice thing about the new client is that I can remotely admin everything from my server. So for the Chimp Challenge it is a quick change in the Folding control software to switch over all my clients.

Very nice, sir! I'm eager to try out the new kernal you've come up with, as not knowing how to do such things myself, I find it nice when someone who can is willing to, not only take the time to do it, but then make it available for those of us who can't. That is very awesome of you, sir.

I do have one question about it. As I understand what you've posted, you are using the BFS scheduler to prioritize the folding client over anything else, so really, it shouldn't matter what client you use, is that correct? I'm just wondering because I truly do not like the V7 client as it can't be monitored via HFM and therefore I can't monitor it from work (not easily anyway). Instead I prefer to keep to the regular Ubuntu client (FAH6.34) and then I would just need to set the priority of the client to a higher setting, is this correct? Anyway, let me know and also, let me know when you get it posted to Dropbox and I'll download it, throw it on my i5 rig and try it out. I can always revert back to 10.10 (which is what I'm using now) if need be. Thanks, sir!!!

So, basically what you're saying is that there wasn't any TPF gain at all (vs 10.10)? Nice work though on compiling your own modified kernel, and that you're willing to share.

I gotta say I'm jealous of those temps, what voltage is the CPU at?

BFS work with the the best client (aka v6) and can be installed with a standard kernel too. But HFM now works with v7 as well as v6.

How would you not need a corefix? And does that mean it's trying to execute 12 threads on your 8 threaded CPU?

Thanks for letting me know that (and for the link). I have been holding off on updating my HFM until after the HPCS beta ends as I'm moving my HFM to a different computer (mainly so I can finally junk the 9 year old Gateway that is running it for me now). I just didn't feel like having to set up 35 clients again in HFM, my remaining 10 will be plenty! Once I shut down all my HPCS clients next week, I'll set up the new version of HFM on my other system and then try out v7 again. Thanks for the info!

You could just save the config file you know and load it on the new install. rolleyes.gif
