Startup script, running with thekraken. it's in /fah, and running at startup, so I don't know about running it as root or user. the startup script is simply cd /fah and then ./fah6 -smp 8 -bigadv

Is it set to run in your builds startup script?

This is how mine is setup. Lots of lines (Click to show)
Code:
cd /home/elchucko/F@H $$ sudo -u elchucko screen -d -m ./fah6 -smp8 -bigadv -verbosity 9

This runs the client as soon as linux boots; before a GUI loads or any kind of log in.

It also makes a separate screen so you don't see anything from the client unless you type in.
Code:
$screen -r

You can set this up this way.
Code:
$sudo nano /etc/rc.local

Your rc.local file should look like this depending on how it is setup.
Code:
#!/bin/sh -e
#
# rc.local
#
# This script is executed at the end of each multiuser runlevel.
# Make sure that the script will "exit 0" on success or any other
# value on error.
#
# In order to enable or disable this script just change the execution
# bits.
#
# By default this script does nothing.
exit 0

You can set anything to run in the rc.local file however it will be run as root; unless you set it to run for a specific user.

Here is exactly how my rc.local file is setup.
Code:
#!/bin/sh -e
#
# rc.local
#
# This script is executed at the end of each multiuser runlevel.
# Make sure that the script will "exit 0" on success or any other
# value on error.
#
# In order to enable or disable this script just change the execution
# bits.
#
# By default this script does nothing.
corehack
cd /home/elchucko/F@H/langouste && sudo -u elchucko ./langouste3 -l 8880 -D
cd /home/elchucko/F@H && sudo -u elchucko screen -d -m ./fah6 -smp 8 -bigadv -verbosity 9
exit 0

This line is what sets the user:
Code:
sudo -u elchucko

With this setup everything runs at boot with no interaction from me. I run the rig headless so I do all interaction through a SSH terminal. Also I disabled the GUI so there is no additional overhead from anything except the F@H client.
Hope this helps.

Don't forget to sign up for this month's Foldathon!!!! If you haven't, click HERE!!!

As usual, if you have signed up for a Foldathon previously this year, you don't need to sign up again, but I know we have some n00bie folders on the team and I wanted to make sure you guys were aware. You'll be folding anyway, so go, get your name put in the hat for the prize pool!!

Also, as an aside, I know most people think of "n00b" or "n00bie" as an insult, I do not, I love that term and call myself a n00b on a regular basis...Just wanted to clear that up. In other words, no offense. thumb.gif

Hey team,

I just wanted to give everyone a heads up, I probably won't be on here as much as usual for the next 4 - 6 weeks (I'll still be around, but maybe only a once or twice a day, sometimes less). I usually keep OCN up at work, but I'm about to start a new project that will be pretty involved and really eat up my time (no more of the downtime I'm used to tongue.gif). I wanted to let you all know, if you need anything quick, please PM both myself and elchucko (list both names on one PM) and one of us should get back to you (at least for me, I have it set up to send me an email when I get a PM, so I should respond fairly quick).

Chuck, if you can get to something before I can, feel free to respond and handle any issues.

Thanks, team!

I hadn't bothered with the screen, because I like to see what's going on by just hitting a key on my keyboard. I also didn't do the set user part, but I'm curious. If I did sudo -u root, would it run as root?

If you are using you rc.local file then just drop the entire sudo -u part.

Should look like.
Code:
cd /folding/folder; ./fah6 -flags

With that in the rc.local it will run as root. I wouldn't suggest running as root though because it can make file permissions and stuff a pain.

To just run something as root all you need is the sudo part, you don't need the -u root.

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm currently doing. How would it make permissions more difficult, wouldn't root access ignore any file permissions and go about its business regardless of owner? or would it be better to run it as user?

The file permissions become an issue when you try to use HFM to monitor.

For instance on my rig I use FTP to connect HFM for monitoring. If I was running everything as root then the rig wouldn't let HFM access any of the file because every time they are written they would be owned by root and not allow any other users access to them.

If this isn't an issue then running the program as root shouldn't have a negative effect on anything. Running as root will give F@H unrestrained access to everything on your rig so it should never have a issue with anything; only will if you are trying to access any log files or anything else later on.

I prefer to have have my client installed in my home directory and run the client under my user account that way I will always be able to access and change with out running sudo before I make a change. It also allows me to log in via FTP and make any changes I need to. Since I admin the rig remotely it makes it a lot easier.
