SLE, glad to hear you made it safe and sound! Just let us know when you're ready to come back online, but don't feel like you have to rush (unless you want to!).

Thanks for the tips on the tubing (I'll talk more about this below)!

As for the colors, OK, going blue and orange seems a little wrong now...so now, which one do I go with, blue or orange??

Also, for the tubing, I'm using Primochill now, so I could stick with that, but I thought I would try something else. I can't seem to find Tygon or Norprene in colors, so those are out. I'm thinking about trying some Feser or Masterkleer (both of which I can find in either blue or orange), do you guys have any opinions on either of those?

I started looking into gases today to build my own AutoCascade for the rig. It would keep a CPU much cooler at a much higher load. However the gases alone are going to cost me close to $900. So my question is would anyone be interested in purchasing a unit if I got a prototype running and working. It would be a Folding only rig or bench. With what my plan is trying to build a full on case to house multiple harddrives and graphics cards is just out of my skill level as of now. I will most likely not even have a prototype done until late summer early fall but I was just thinking about putting some feelers out.

$900 just in gases!? That's crazy!! I'm guessing you have to buy them in bulk (can't just buy what you need)? I'd love to buy one, but honestly I don't think I can see it in my budget this year (I already have too much planned). Good luck with it, sir, and keep us posted.

chucko, have you given thought to putting a TEC under your phase? it's another form of cascade, and you don't have to buy any extra gasses, assuming you have enough chiller capacity for the CPU+TEC load.

Right now the Phase I have won't even handle a i7 so a TEC I think is out of the question. I have thought about it but with the possibilites of an AutoCascade I'm leaning even further in that direction; especially since I just received another qoute for a smaller amount of the gases and only $75 per bottle. The gases would only cost me around ~$300.

Well, that is getting better!

Ok, so I was watching an old episode of Top Gear (the good Brittish version) and they were driving electric cars. Jeremy said the Nissan Leaf used just 0.1kW per mile. So to go 100 miles it would use roughly 10kW of electricity. This got me to thinking...how does R2-D2 compare to an electric car? So I busted out some maths...

When I hooked R2 up to a Kill-a-Watt, he drew 822W while folding on the CPU (at 4.7GHz) and both GPUs (at 725MHz). That equates to 0.822kW. Therefore, for the same amount of electric it takes to run a Leaf 100 miles, my computer can run for 12.17 hours. Now, the really sad part. This made me decide to figure out what it costs me to run the beast per month (and frankly, I was kinda scared).

So, you figure in a normal 30 day month, there are 720 hours. So, at 0.822kWh, R2 uses 591.84kWh. I pulled up my last electric bill and found that the overall cost for our electric (for both generation and delivery) is $0.074526 per kWh. So, 591.84 * 0.074526 = $44.11 per month.

Now, if I compare that to our overall usage, it gets stupid! Last billing cycle was 34 days and we used a total of 1,698kWh of electricity. R2 alone used 670.752kWh (cost: 670.752 * 0.074526 = $49.99!!). So, to get the percentage of overall usage that R2 used I would do ((670.752 / 1698) * 100) = 39.5%. So basically, I could drop my electric bill by almost 40% just by shutting down R2!!

/maths

Yeah, I knew folding was an expensive hobby when it comes to the addiction of building / upgrading hardware, but I’ve never actually calculated the cost in electric before!! HOLY CRAP!!

Now does this mean I’m going to stop folding? No. However, I have a goal of making it to inside the top 500 worldwide (I’m at 694 right now), but once I hit that, I might have to slow down. Also, I have a few rigs at home that don’t put up many points (2 of them put up less than 1k PPD), so I think I’m going to slap the Kill-a-Watt on those, figure up the cost and see if it would help me significantly to shut them down, but other than that, I’m going to continue full steam ahead!

EDIT:
There was no real purpose to this post, othere than I figured all this up and need to tell someone. I can't tell my wife, if I did, she'd kill me and sell off R2!! Anyway, there it is, have a good one, team!!

Wow, I need to move back to the Midwest.  Electricity is so cheap over your way.

You pay $.07/kWh? I pay twice that, and my TC rig costs $28/mo to run.
