Yeah, I don't want to buy a Bimmer until I can afford to buy one that is either new or close to it. I've heard they're pretty expensive (compared to my typical Hondas or now Mazda) to work on. On top of that, I've owned my fair share of older cars that I had to work on. That was fine when I was young and had time to work on my car whenever it broke down or needed something, but anymore, I just don't have the time or desire to be wrenching on a car, so I’ll stick with my cheap rice burners until I get done with my degree and get a good paying job.

This is also the reason I gave up the tuning scene. I had an older Honda Civic for years that I spent a ton of time and money on getting it all setup to autocross, then when it came to it, I got busy with work and finishing my BA, and I never had time to race it, so I ended up letting my wife trade it in when she bought her last Honda CRV (I say her last because she just got a new on last month). I used to love spending my free time working on my car, but I just don’t have the time for it anymore.

So is the comp toast until the stats get fixed?

Sorry I have been away for so long. I've been very busy the last few months. I got married on May 4th and the weeks and months leading up to it were very busy. My rig was in pieces up until last weekend. I never got the Phase Change done because I haven't been able to get it filled with refrigerant because of money. So I finally threw in the towel and put the 2600k in it under water. Right now I'm trying to dial in the OC so I can get it folding again. At this rate it may take me a week as it is giving me issues. However I'm taking it slow to get the voltages as low as possible. Once I get the CPU stable I'm going to try and get the RAM tweaked so that the Hardware is running as fast as possible. Maybe at that point I will start messing with the kernels and such again.

Once again I have been away too long; I'm going to try and get on here more often from now on.

Congrats, Chuck!!!!!

As for the TC, yeah, we're dead in the water right now. The powers are working to get the site back up and running, but until that happens, we're stuck with no TC. With that said, take your time with your OC, I can't see any reason you need to rush, so make sure it's locked down and right for when we can get this game rolling again.

Thank you! This 2600k is giving me fits because I'm trying to get it stable at the lowest volts possible and right now I'm adjust one setting at a time and stressing. So far no joy during the stress testing.

A nice E28 528i would do fine (although a 535 would be even nicer of course), and not too expensive...

Too bad about the M5, Fieldsweeper, it's such a lovely car. frown.gif

I've been wrenching on my e30 for 10 years, and it's a surprisingly easy car to work on, especially compared to anything with a transverse V engine or a japanese design (cough subaru cough).

I love RWD for "performance" driving, aka racing/trackdays/dirt track. not a big fan of FWD, but AWD is OK in my book.

Yeah, I just know the parts for Honda are really cheap, and to me, they are easy to work on. But then again, I’ve only ever worked on my Honda’s and my 1 Nissan, and the Nissan was a PITA.

As for your love of RWD, I can’t argue, RWD is definitely going to be more fun to drive (unless you live somewhere with a lot of snow and ice, in which RWD really, really sucks, at least in my experience), but I love how well my Si handled. Outside of a Mini, I’ve never driven a car that handled the back roads better! I really miss that car. As much as I love my new Mazda (which is getting its windows tinted as we speak), and it is fun to drive, it’s nowhere near as much fun as the Si was.

Anyway, for all my BMW fans here, BMW just set a pretty cool world record (by a crazy amount!). They set the world record for the longest drift, beating the previous record by about 44.4 MILES:

Haha, cool vid. I think I'd get dizzy after a couple laps.... puke.gif

Congrats Chuck! applaud.gif

And my rig is also, ah, resting while I occasionally try to get it stable. I'm this close to getting it setup @ 50x, but temps are getting too high with the H100i which seems to affect my work units and PPD. So I'll prolly knock it back to 49x and push the ram for all its worth.

I think RWD gets an undeservedly bad rap in snow. 90% of a car's performance comes down to the tires. running snow tires in the summer (like I am right now on the 5) blows chunks in cornering grip, and running poor tires in the winter makes anything suck. Even AWD can't make up for bad tires. I think the reason RWD gets a bad rap in winter is people expect magic, and can't handle oversteer. FWD is no better on acceleration (i've passed many a FWD vehicle that couldn't make it up hills in the winter) and AWD/4WD manage to mask a lack of grip by powering two more wheels, but once you try to stop or go around a corner, the cat is out of the bag (ever wondered why you see so many SUVs in the ditch come winter?).

this is a video (in my '87 e30 3 series) with hakka tires (high end studless snows) where I sat shotty and let my buddy drive it.

he turned in a faster time than I did in my own car. loads of fun.

after switching from all seasons to winter/summer tires, I will NEVER go through winter again without winter rubber. it's just not worth it.

insofar as regular winter is concerned, I've driven the past 8 winters in that RWD car, and I pray for snowstorms so I can go run dumb errands like buying a gallon of milk in 6" of snow. SE WI is so good at clearing snow they take the fun out of little snowstorms. the new AWD car is "better" in the snow, but it has less soul. whatever that means.
