Yeah, the only two RWDs I've owned were an '89 Chevy S10 regular cab with a full bed and a '91 Chevy S10 Blazer. I had all weather tires on both (as I do on all my cars living in Cincy) and while both were exciting to drive in the snow, I have to say, I've preferred the two Civics I've owned for driving in snow. I never had any control issues in the Civics no matter what the weather conditions were.
And while I do like getting to go play in a RWD car, I don't like having to fight over steer on my 26 mile (each way) commute to work, which was the case with both the RWDs I had. Given, neither of them were good cars, and the tires were far from optimal, but my Civics weren’t great cars either, and I’ve been running the same tires (Kumho Ecastas ASTs) on every car I’ve owned. They are a great cheap tire that wears well and they handle pretty good in all weather conditions. Besides the road noise (which I’m not going to lie, is LOUD), I’ve never had a problem with these tires. On my Civics (a 2001 LX that had a few modifications and a 2008 Si that was stock), the cars did great in the snow and handled exactly as I wanted them to.
For both Civics, I did keep a set of summer tires, Falken Ziex 912s, so the Kumhos were only for winter on those cars, but I’ve run them year round on all the other cars I’ve owned.
The Si did produce a bit of over steer when the road was slick, but it was predictable and never like my either of my Chevys (my truck actually did a complete 180 pulling away from a stop light with just a light dusting of snow, but that was partially driver error, as it was just 2 months after I got my license).
Honestly, though, like with anything RWD vs. FWD vs. AWD is a preference. I like my little rice runners, so I’m going to be a FWD fan for life. Others, like you, u3b3r, or my friend Ryan (who is a Mustang guy through and through) are going to favor RWD. I don’t think there is anything wrong with either, I just prefer FWD (honestly, I just prefer Civics, but hey, I’m a Honda guy!). With that said, my 3 isn’t a bad car either, I’m really loving the handling in that so far (not as good as the Si, but pretty close).
Also, I wanted to say, that is an awesome video and I’d love the chance to do something like that!
