My first attempt ever... - Page 5

well I'm on my way into work now to install the new mobo and all my cooling stuff... more room on a tech bench than my apartment...

Hey Ropey... what did you mean when classifying my cpu as a "C" Pentium 4?

p.s. I just noticed that my northbridge has the stock "black" hs on it that says "asus" right on it and the southbridge has nothing so I can obviously add my southbridge hs... but I got a vantec copper hs that came with both north and southbridge hs's... is there any way to remove the old northbridge hs from the mobo?... I'll definately try it on the ****ty mobo once I've verified that it is in fact shot... I haven't yet looked that closely at it... so I'm unsure if it's just stuck on there or if its mounted some other way...

as ususal... all of you assistance is much appreciated...

thanks guys...

everything's installed, creating a new image so I can start with a completely new pc... I'll post back when I get everything installed and I'll OC to around 3.6 or 3.8...

hey... quick question... I just noticed that on my Ultimate Boot CD that Prime and Memtest and all of those are already on it... would I get a more accurate depiction of my internals runnning utilities from there or should I just do it in XP?...

thanks again for all of your help guys...

I always find testing to be best when run at the lowest instruction layer. If we could run tests at the binary level completely we would then have the most accurate representation of those tests. The command instruction level is lower than the Windows GUI level so I say yes to your question.

Remember that when running a Windows GUI memory test you are running within the Windows Operational Kernel and there are ECC algorithms that will catch operational bit flips in software and will correct them. Some of these errors may be being produced in hardware (Which is just software encoded in silicon) and caught via these algorithms.

There will be no such correction at the command level and one can more easily recognise and isolate such errors. Thus I would never run a Memory test in a Windows GUI unless I was debugging software, not hardware.
