Anyone run a UPS here?

Thread Starter
Does anyone run an uninteruptible power supply here? I ordered one because the power here sucks (literally). We get line dips as low as 105 volts and when the voltage comes back up we get a surge sometimes in a wave as high as 135 volts, especially in the summer when my neighbors fire up their central air system. Not to mention the brownouts, we had a big one the other day (I just love having vermont yankee nucler power station in my backyard...). The surge protectors don't do a whole lot for the surges and nothing for the dips. I wanted to protect my compy, lord knows how bad it is for the psu and mobo ect. to be exposed to these voltage swings. I thought I would ask if anyone else had one and what they thought about them. I got this unit.

Thanks, you put my mind at rest for ordering it. Don't you just love brownouts, blackouts, ect.? You should see how fast we go through light bulbs.

We get outages occasionally, not enough to justify getting a UPS though...I would get one, but we have generators. Out here in hick land, everyone's got one. Plus, the PFC on my PSU takes care of ripples.

Excellent choice on the UPS. That will keep your line voltage right where it should be. The hot swappable battery feature is a nice plus.

Burn - Boy do I know what you mean. When the power goes out up here, it sounds like a racetrack with all the gennies going.

Yeah, that one should give power in a black out for longer than 60min. Mine is an APC 800VA (540 Watts) and it gives about 1 hour with a 500w PSU and 2 LCD Monitors. I bought a APC 350 for my DSL Modem and my router so they still have power also. Most of the time I'm using the internet (either browsing of playing games on-line) and haveing a UPS that lasted that long seamed like a waste with out being able to get online.

We have a generator too. The power is not clean enough that you should run a compy off it, PFC or not. During the winter we will get ice storms and trees that come down b/c of the snow which drops the lines. Without a generator to run the boiler the pipes will freeze, which is a huge mess.

When you get as many brown outs and black outs as I do here, go figure, our little quadrant of the grid SUCK bad! We get so many we make up for you lucky people who don't have any
Remember the big black out we had, our little quad of 1/4 sq mile was the last around here to light up... almost 2 whole days longer than everyone else.

I run an APC 620 and 350 on my setup. We don't get to many spikes or dips around here but the peace of mind is great. Good choice moving from just a surge protector to a UPS.

Ya, I live several miles out of town, so we are pretty low on the priority to get things back up, not to mention the power company refuses to run thick enough lines and a large enough transformer for my house and my neighbors ( we share the same transformer). Everyone has a generator out here in the boonies too. Were I used to live we were on the same grid as the local hospital, so the power rarely went out and when it did it was for a very short time period.
