WD Caviar Black vs Samsung Spinpoint F3 - Page 2

I have a samsung spinpoint still in bubblewrap unused, will plan on using it soon. I've read nothing but good stuff about it, even reading as much negative reviews as I could possibly find I think the samsung still comes out on top.

It will still be 5.9 if I can recall. You need a SSD to break the 6 point barrier.

Not by a long shot.

But in this case I would go F3. Can't beat the price vs performance vs capacity.

HDTune benchmarks say F3's have about 15-20% faster sequential speeds, and Blacks have 15-20% faster access times.

They're pretty equal as OS drives. Most people here go for whatever is cheaper.

i have used to own 4 500gb blacks (AALS) in raid 0 then due to hype of the F3's i switched to 4 500gb F3's and to be honest i really cant tell all that much diffence but from the benchmarks it does show the F3's being around 20% faster then the blacks i had

If you're curious why a drive with 20% higher sequential speeds doesn't feel any faster...

http://www.overclock.net/hard-drives...l#post10559702

On a good SATA controller, F3's have access times under 13ms. But Blacks can be as low as ~11.6ms, so the figures in my post approximately hold true.

I'd probably go for the Blacks.

I have 2x WD Black 750 GB and 2x Spinpoint F1 750 GB's in my fileserver.
The blacks are consistently about 10 MB/sec higher per drive on throughput.

Not sure how the F1's compare to the F3's though.
