In light of my current setup i'm looking to upgrade.I've got 1k, and I'm pretty much looking to go dual core. This will be a gaming rig. But I'm also a multitasking fiend.. I'm tryin to decide between an opy or a 3800 x2? Also maybe SLI??? or should i go with a single 7800???

Thanks for the help guys

If you got the cash, I would go for a x2 4400 instead.

Yeah i know! I've only got a thousand US, And with the new processor is a new board. So that 6600 I have is (gasp) AGP.. So it's gone, So i'm tryin to figure on either a 7800?, or two like 6800s in SLI, I'm just tryin to decide between a dual core opy or a 3800 x2?

I'm going dual core because I'm in the same boat as you. Gaming, yet lots of multitasking. I figure programs will start coming out that are dual-core ready so it'll be a looksy into the future. Screw the 7800, go 7900 GT. (In SLi, like I plan to do a few months after the build) The 7900 is a little cooler because it has a smaller chip (90 nm instead of 110 i'm pretty sure) better for OC'ing.

With the 4400+ at about $450 and a great MB about $200 that leaves you with enough for a 7800GT
If your into volt modding the it 1.5v the OCing has gotten to 80% increases
Oh, the above provided you use some of you exhisting stuff

dual core opy or a 3800 x2?
I read a bit on this lately, finding it hard to choose between Opteron 165 and X2 3800 (For an other comp.).

If you plan to overclock the 165, it should be able to get better than an X2 4400+ apparently(2.6-2.8GHz). The X2 3800 have been told as a (variable*) good overclocker.

*Mine is barely able to keep it up at stock speeds...(I think I read that they were not always good) I guess it's an heat problem tho.

The other difference is that the 165 has 1MB of cache while the X2 3800 has 512k. It's not pretty important tho.

How many parts from your existig systme do you plan on migrating to your new system? 170 is also a extremely nice chip for about 400 and a mobo for 150 for areal nice one. 7800 for 300 and atill some room to upgrade your chip.

If you want to save money, do the 7600GT. It's a very good card for its price, and will leave you the cash you need for RAM and everything else. I personally say go for the Opty, but either chip will do you well.
