The 3800 is better than the presler stock. http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu...920-930_9.html
Go for a X2 3800.

Well so far my 820 is doing everything I want it to....sounds like you want to try out AMD though...X2 is more than adequate. RAID 0 4 X 80 is a good fast set up. A 6xxxx Nvidia card would probably do the job. NEC makes good reliable burners. a Seasonic PSU and at least 2 GB of RAM--if you are OCing it--be sure to use a decent HS.

I know its an AMD forum and all, but If I were to pick a rig for video editing, it's be a PowerMac G5 Quad. Now, the Conroe PowerMacs will overpower it, but currently, I think the G5 Quad is king of video editing. I worked with one last semester on a short film and it was great.

if you go X2 I'd at least go with the 4400+...has twice the cache that the 3800+ has...makes a big difference in intensive work like video editing

The G5 Quad and $1,000 don't combine too well. Think X2 will be just fine.
