Computer not recognizing my hard drive?

Thread Starter
So it turns out the problem wasn't with the RAM... it seems that my computer does not want to recognize my hard drive. It can find the drive when I go to BIOS, but otherwise it doesn't seem to think it exists.

I tried a lot of different versions of Windows (some legit, some not), and the only one that doesn't blue screen is the Vista Beta. With Vista, it gets to the point where it asks me where to install windows, and then it can't find anywhere to install it....

I tried installing Linux, and instead of installing it seems to just run it from the CD (when I go into the "Computer" file, it says it has 450ish mb of free space, and doesn't show any Drives). I don't want to use linux, but I figured I would at least try it and see what would happen.

Has anybody else had this problem of the computer not recognizing the hard drive?

Thanks,
- Pete

I downloaded Maxtor's "MaxBlast 4 Bootable CD .ISO image file", and burned it onto a CD and ran it as a boot CD. The computer still couldn't find the goddamn drive... this is reallly annoying. Also, my harddrive has started beeping whenever I plug the power cable in..... I don't know what the **** is

Thanks for any help,
- Pete

Is it a SATA drive?
Did you run the drivers when prompted to when loading the OS?
IF so, are you using the correct SATA ports and are they enabled in the BIOS?

As it would turn out, the problem was that with SATA drives you need to install the drivers manually by pressing f6 while windows is loading. However, Windows only lets you load drivers from a floppy drive. I don't have a floppy drive, so I'm just going to try to use the Vista Beta as my OS since it isn't retarded (it lets you load drivers from a CD). I'll let you guys know when I run into more problems.

Thanks,
- Pete

you will NEED to create a foppy which contain the SATA driver on it. insert the foppy to your computer when you installing the windows. then it will detect your HD and install the windows to that HD.

if you have more than ONE HD, then unplug the power of the others. only plug in the SATA HD that you want to install the windows. after you finished installing the windows, then plug in other HD.

And to think I wanted to change my good old maxtor paralel hdd... this means I'll have to buy a floppy too, another 10 bucks. Don't understand why microsoft is stucked to this dinosaur, since drivers could be loaded (correct me if I'm wrong) from a USB disk very well. I mean the floppy doesn't have anything special, it's just a data support like any other. Hope on Vista this wouldn't be necesary to have a floppy, 'cause I'll be stuck with this drive a looong time.

Do you happen to know if I can install WIN XP on a SATA drive without the floppy, but with my PATA hdd conected? It should be nice
