6800GS. Can it go higher?

Thread Starter
i got my 6800GS up to 418/1160 mhz and when i try to raise it and run the "test change" thing in the nvidia CP, it says that the test failed to run at the clock frequencies and that i should lower the settings. but i've seen the 6800GS go higher then that. is it safe to go any higher or should i follow the warning and lower it?

not sure i got mine running at 500mhz core and 1.15 on the mem useing standard cooling but i did get what you got after i reinstalled windows and the drivers again it wouldnt let me overclock it, but i restarted the machine and it worked fine!

try doing the detect optium settings (note this changes resolution and hertz) then after that restore defult settings, then restart the machine and then try overclocking to what you want, some makes of the 6800gs are more overclockable then others

also what psu have you got have you got enough power going to it?

The reason that the test will pass sometimes and not others is most likely temperature. If you reboot, the temperature will go back to idle, and it should pass more easily. This usually isn't a sign that it's a stable overclock, because the card will heat up while gaming. Use ATItool's artifact finder to test.

my PSU is an Enermax 350W >_>
ya, I used the ATI tool to find artefacts, but it shows all these weird stuff on the 3d view thing and says like Delta (then some numbers) on Pixel xxxx but then says no erros for x seconds.

at what temps. should i be worrying at? like mines around 49/50 on idle and 51-54 on a heavy load.

over 70c isnt good. My 6800gs runs at 520/1.21 stable but its sweet spot is probably 520/1.19. Best option is to overclock your vid card after its been warmed up because a cooler card will overclock higher but give you a false sense of what your card is stable at under stress.

edit: also try detect optimal settings, usually gives you a good setting and test for artifacts after that. Then if none play a game for an hour or so if its stable and then test again. If no artifacts you are golden, if you get artifacts back it down. Thats about the best option you have imo.

The AGP 6800GS cards do not OC very well, but you can enable the locked pipes. The PCIe 6800GS has no unlockable pipes, but you can OC it to hell and back.
