9800NP to 9800 pro

Thread Starter
Ok, ive just got a 9800NP, i know not the greatest but i got it cheap.

Ive overclocked it to 375/334 from 325/290 on the stock fan which is almost the 9800 pro clocks (380/340)

its got this layout: http://www.composter.kiev.ua/images/...4/9800_pro.jpg
I'm not sure if its the same as the 9800pro in that pic but from a quick inspection its pretty close.
From what ic an see they're the same so:
1. Why cant i get it to the standard 9800Pro clocks at least(apparantly its effectivly the same card)
2.Would modding it to a 9800pro be worth it. I know it wont unlock any pipelines but the memory timings would be different, correct? BTW its got Samsung memory

If the pipes are good it should give you a decent performance increase. As for not getting the same oc, the ram timings are different (I believe) and that could be a cause. You should try flashing to the pro. Don't worry about the clocks. If it artifacts but the pipes are good, you can always use a bios editor and edit the clocks so its at 375/334. Theres a program to do it just forgot the name. But those 4 pipes, if good, should help decently.

There are no disabled pipes on the 9800NP, Which core do you have? (R350?) How much onboard memory does the card have? (128MB?)

I don't know what core i have or what brand it is (2nd hand off ebay)
It has 128MB of memory

Are there any other ways of finding out which core i have except removing the heatsink?

Edit: i Just checked in ATitool and its and R350.

I dont usually trust software as it can lie, but in this case I do believe its a R350/128MB/256-bit memory interface card. Flashing to a 9800pro will just gain you a different name and slightly higher stock clocks, nothing overclocking wouldnt get you.

So different memory timings (if there is a difference between the Pro and Non-Pro) doesnt really make a difference?

And from what i can see, my NP and all the pro's ive seen look exactly the same. Is there actually a difference between them?

You wont notice a huge diff between the mem timings, if anything at all. Different cores/Frame buffer size/Memory interface are the main differences and whether there is a BIOS image available for the mod.
