Task manager crashes?

Thread Starter
I posted this over at the laptop forums, but it may be better answered here. Anyway, I bought a second-hand laptop, and there's something wrong with it.

For some god forsaken reason, Task Manager refuses to stay open. I press ctrl-alt-del, and it's up for a second or two, then just disappears.

Since buying it, I've flashed and the BIOS to the newest version, formatted it and installed XP Pro SP2 on it twice, and both times the task manager problem reared its ugly head. I'm totally lost as to what to do. It's a genuine version of windows too, which makes it even more frustrating.

Anyway, here are the specs:
Banias 1.6Ghz
512MB DDR
40GB HDD
Mobility Radeon 9000

Would be great if anyone coudl help.

Is that the only app that is crashing, does everything else run fine?
If that is the only thing that is crashing then it is weird.
Crashing to BSOD or not, if it is does it say anything that might give you a clue?
Is the rig overheating and crashing?
Need more info mate?

Yep, it's only task manager crashing. Everything else is A-OK.

No BSOD, nothing weird, no error messages, just disappears after a second.

The battery is warm to the touch, but everything else is relatively cool.

I wish I had more info to give you, but it's simply bizzare. I've never seen anything like this.

I tried using the run command, no luck.

Scanned with AVG and Avast, no virus.

:\\ This is getting ridiculous. Got any more ideas? lol
