@Darkness Sakura How well does the GTX980s run on air while folding? Because if I get one, the card going to be on air for a bit till I can save for a waterblock. Lucky enough I still got four spare radiators and my old Rasa 750 res/pump combo that I can smack into Black Dragon temporarily. Though, going have to mod the crap out of that old NZXT Apollo case if I want to try to add a big 360 radiator in.

Depends, I run 4 and 2 in two separate rigs. My main/power rig that now has 4, but used to have 3 (on air), and when it had the 3 my GPUs ranged from high 50's (58*C) to low 70's (71*C at times). If you're like @lanofsong and run a single 980 you'll be just fine as they keep the temps quite low on air. Unfortunately, when I added the two others, having started with only one 980, the temps rose. So if you plan to have two, space them out so they don't bake each other. If you plan to get three or four... well water cooling is the best since it'll space the cards for breathing room and keep them at an average of high 30's (35-38*C) with four in total on a 1080 external rad.

They only run cold when either by themselves or not stacked on each other. Once you hit past two GPUs, you tend to have the only option to separate one and pair the other and the one that sits on top will become very hot... this is speaking from personal and very recent experience. The only other option is to run a mining rig similar to that of Mountain Mods' Bitcoin mining cases...

Yeah, I understand they run at lower temps than most GPUs, definitly one of the major reasons I looking at those cards since it gets quite toasty here in the spring and summer. Just curious how far can they be safely pushed on a OC on air while folding. I may try to get one this month depending if I can nab a used one for a decent price then after my June deployment nab a water block for the card. I just really want to get Black Dragon back to 24/7 folding, but the 7970 is loud as heck and a hog at electricity.

Probably going to give my 7970 to my Dad when I get around to building that compact computer for him.

Get one for now and hold the rest for later, or if you feel like making 900K PPD, get two and space them out. The moment you decide to get three or more, you'll definitely need to water cool and that's considering case size too. I was running three 980s with 4 Delta fans, the ones that at full power make 240CFM, at nearly 75% and they were able to drop the temps low enough to keep them from throttling down in clocks. To give you an idea of how much they dropped, when the Delta fans weren't running my temps would easily hit 80*C, or more at times, in a room around 10-15*C (50-60*F)... your PPD won't change a whole lot but if it throttles constantly you'll notice.

Edit: Forgot to add, that's with all clocks above 1500 MHz, mid 1400 MHz didn't really change much... it just throttled less.

Ok. So one 980 on air will be fine by itself. I still want to water cool the card later on since the NZXT Apollo case I have is not the biggest case out there, plus I have plans to try to get a 2nd 980 later on or even try to get up to three. Though, if I do get up to three the case would need to get changed that is for sure. Actually, I be pushing it trying to fit two inside that case unless I put water blocks on them.

Hmmm, wait a minute I do have that other NZXT case some where. I think it is a little bit bigger, and be far easier to mod for radiators. May have to finally retire the old Apollo case. Can't complain, had this case for over eight years now.

Yeah, for 24/7 folding purposes one will cool just nicely; assuming you have adequate air flow, even without it's still good. Also, to give you another idea of how big my case is that currently holds the 4 980s, I rock a Corsair 600T and this is what it looks like with three 980s stacked on each other on air.

So in a mid-tower with a slightly wider body, they will be fine depending on your case. No use buying another case unless you really have to. My temps, currently under water, are not half bad. If anything they barely break 38*C and the lowest usually floats around 33*C. But yes, I'd stick with just one 980 for now until you get a water cooling block for it. As for water blocks, I currently use two different ones and both are great - Aquacomputer Kryographics and EK 980 Waterblcok (not sure of the name). Either way those are quite good in parallel (Aquacomputer) and Quad Semi-Parallel (EK). The quad has a tendency to run cooler on the lower two than the top two but that's to be understood since the water is being heated by the first two.

Once you hit past two GPUs, you tend to have the only option to separate one and pair the other and the one that sits on top will become very hot... this is speaking from personal and very recent experience. The only other option is to run a mining rig similar to that of Mountain Mods' Bitcoin mining cases...

I now have two 980's on air, both can fold at 1540Mhz with temps any where from 50's to 60's (deg C) all depending on ambient temp, they will run cooler if kept in my basement where it is considerably colder. Now my TC 980 is under water and in my basement and is running around 1596Mhz @ 29C. All GPU's are in separate rigs.
