9800 cooling issues

Thread Starter
I suspect my 9800's fan to be near dead, as its the noisiest part of my computer. I bought the card used, so I have no idea how old it is either. Anyway, because of the puny heatsink and the crappy fan, I still haven't OCed it.

I was wondering if I should consider putting a 9200 or other similar heatsink on it, and use my ghetto fix to cool it.

Would this cool it more? Or would just removing the fan and blowing air directly on the old hs work just as well? And if it worked at all, would it be cooler?

My other idea was to drill mounting holes in a 500mhz amd hs and try to mount it onto the card. But that would be alot harder....

Putting an AMD HSF will be hard and probably heavy.
If the fan is dead\\ running slow\\ noisy, there is no reason why you can't replace it with something similar or put another fan as close to the heatsink as possible and try and replicate the original fan. You might even have it running cooler than the original

I was thinking of something like this, but mostly as a last resort.
http://www.rojakpot.com/showarticle....rtno=72&pgno=1

Do you think the ghetto card cooler will cool it enough with the stock hs? I guess its worth a try.

that cooler mod does'nt look right
why not just buy an akasa chipset cooler, it just sticks on the core with a thermal pad,

w00t! I just tore the old fan off and left all the cooling up to the legendary ghetto card cooler! Its been running cool and stable for a day of Oblivion and OCs, so I asume its working well.

I'll save that hs mod for when the card voltage gets to around 2.4 v...

I'm looking at this aswell.
uuzzors2k, is the ghetto card cooler blowing cool air in or warm air out?
and would i need to remove my stock fan or can i just leave it in there with no adverse affects?

The fan blows cool air onto the heatsink. Maybe not very good for the case airflow, but it hasn't had any impact on CPU temps. I would remove the stock fan and use the stock heatsink, with a strong fan blowing air onto up onto it.
I recently completed the AMD heatsink mod, but it actually preformed worse than the stock cooler! I think this is because of the crappy shim and core design ATI uses. Also I couldn't cool the hs fast enough, causing the core to overheat twice! I'm back to using stock for the moment....
I'll post some pics later.

Just remove the fan on the stock heatsink and setup a fan system similar to what I did if you want better cooling.

I promised pics, so here they are. The mod wasn't too difficult to complete, but it needed a lot of thermal paste. I wouldn't recommend a mod like this for the ATIs, but rather Nvidia. As long as the Nvidia cores don't have shims!!
