Honestly he might not even be aware of what the board actually offers as it was a preview some of the features are pretty hard to find between boards. He should have reserved judgment.

When the board originally came out one of the early reviews had reported a BLCK problem, basically after a certain clock gaming performance plummeted. The reviewer had tried to contact other reviewers to test the problem but none got back to him. This issue has since been linked to the video card.

When i first heard about it i was worried about the board, but I'm glad that has been resolved. Nice to see people hitting those clocks I probably never will lol....

I kinda just wanted to state that "problem" also in case one of the people interested in the board originally heard of the problem but didn't actively check into it.
ooo thanks for clarifying the problem, now i want to get the board even more

Thank you - this issue is what I was alluding to above as well. Just couldn't remember where I read it, and whether or not it was resolved.

Bottom line: there is no BCLK issue with the RIIIF.

Hey guys, it was me who found the BCLK issue but as mentioned none of the other reviewers bothered to check if it was board specific or what. Thankfully I did have another graphics card to test it with and for some reason it turned out to be my HD5870 being the problem but I still don't understand the reason behind it. It's good to see that other people aren't getting similar problems because that was its only downside.

I wouldn't listen to TTL's review because he rushed his. The R3F is well worth the money and an excellent board. It's the perfect alternative to the Extreme.

Indeed - it's very difficult to tell why a 5870 would start to show decreasing 3d performance benchmarks after a certain bclk, but in your case, at least we can be sure it's the card and not the board.

One strange effect I have noticed: when overclocking with software (turbo EVO), Unigine Heaven 2.1 gets quite fooled. In particular, if I bench, lower the bclk, then rebench, the results are inflated by roughly the percentage change of the bclk speed. For instance, lowering from 216 to 200 (8%) increases the heaven score by 8% (54 fps to 58.32 fps). Rest assured, I'm not getting an extra 8% at 8% slower cpu speeds. The corollary is that increasing the blck between benches can yield suspect decreasing results: it fools the software.

The point is that that software overclocking can cause problems with benchmarks that have nothing to do with what is really going on. It appears that the benchmark may use a reference speed set at boot time and fail to update it with the new OC setting.

Updated pic with my new RAM.

I am going to realign my cooler horizontally (when I get some free time).

This is really the only limitation of the board.

Maybe realigned with thinner fans will give plenty of room for the cooler? Seems many mobos have limited room for these larger coolers today.

Thinner fans would likely do it but this is the only asus board I've used thus far that the 38mm fans won't fit in a horizontal config.

Mind you I had the same issue with the EVGA X58 SLI board as well (actually couldn't do push pull in either vertical or horizontal with 2 fans at all).

There are plenty of DDR3 kits with low profile coolers. It's not like RAM gets hot enough to need them.

Although I got a great deal on my RE3, I almost wish I would have waited for this board. It seems like it is more refined than the RE3. I am not complaining about my RE3, but other than my 980x I cannot seem to get a decent overclock without some voltage. My E5640 takes 1.35v vcore to get 200x21 to work and be stable. I have had some other weird issues lately which making me think it might actually be my PSU, but for now it just looks like the Formula is more refined.

I assume you are now running an RIIIF? Your sig says otherwise at the moment...

If you are, 67C seems a bit high, but 32C is a high ambient temp. Mine idles at 45C for IOH and reaches 50C at load, but I'm in Rochester, NY in the Fall so my ambient is only 22C (72F).
