Official Asus Rampage III Formula Review/Owners Guide - Page 39

hello guys im new to the forums and i just got a brand new rig, id like to do alittle overclocking nothing extreme. first ill list my specs

haf 932 case
asus formula, of course
intel i7 970 with coolmaster v6 GT
2 x evga 570 superclocked
12gb corsair dominator 1600mhz
corsair hx850 watt psu

my system is air cool and idle temps are as follows

case temp is 24-30
cpu is 25-29
gpu is 30-32

now i know the forumula has a built in auto-overclock which i already used to turn it up too a standard 980x speed. theres so many pages here i dont know where to begin but is the auto overclock good enough or can someone tell me what some good settings would be?

i did 2 3dmark 11 extreme benchmarks first time i got 3349 second i got 3328 not sure why it went down.

i know all systems are different but are there some settings i can check or set that the auto overclock wouldnt set?

Bottom line is i dont have alot of knowledge when it comes to OC'in i built the pc my self and i can do most standard stuff but when it comes to voltages and mhz i get lost. So if anyone can list some good settings for me, im not looking to get crazy but somewhere in between.

thanks!
Greg

Uh, this is for those that may have bought or thinking about getting an open box from Newegg and worry that it might be missing I/O shield or something.

Now you can order the I/O shield for R3F directly from Asus's eStore. Shipping isn't too bad ($7 for me for FedEx ground). Just thought I post it here in case anyone ever needs it.

Well, I thought I had things stable but obviously I don't because I keep getting BSOD's with 0x116, when I try to run Kombuster or any other graphical applicatioin. A little research tells me that this is due to low IOH voltage, so I bump it up a little bit... another 116 BSOD, bump it up... another 116 BSOD.

Finally I had bumped my IOH voltage up so high that windows wouldn't even load, but when I checked the event viewer I was STILL getting a 0x116 error!

I'm running MSI GTX 460 Hawks in SLI with the shipped OC of 780/1560 and memory clock of 1800. MSI provides a utility that you can use to change voltages on the card itself, so should I try going back to default IOH settings and bumping the voltage up on the card itself?

This is really strange.

@H0urg1ass

Bump that QPI/DRAM Core voltage.

I feel for you, I had at least 2 weeks of frustration before SLI started working for me. My fix came with IOH ~1.35v, but I can't get BCLK over 192. I chalk some of that up to having 12GB of RAM. I have played with the PCI bus clock between 100 to 105, not sure if that made any difference or not. Admittedly, I have not tried all the permutations that a good overclocker should... It's part of my plan for continual improvement protracted over time of ownership. Keeps things feeling fresh.

I went PAST 1.35, in fact I was in the yellow "danger" area of the mobo before I set everything back to AUTO.. and then suddenly I stopped getting 0x116 BSOD's. Very strange.

Also, I found a workaround for why my mouse kept hanging up. I turns out that if I plug a USB mouse into any of my mobo USB ports, I get this weird lag across my entire system. When dragging windows around they will leave shadows for a few milliseconds, lots of programs will hang up with (not responding) and the mouse will hang up whenever I play games.

I plugged an old old 1990's era PS2 mouse into the legacy PS2 port, and all those issues vanished. Except now I have a new problem, which is I have to do all of my interfacing with my thousands of dollars worth of computer equipment through a 50 cent piece of crap PS2 mouse.

Back to the SLI issue, do I need to be bumping up any other voltages on my system other than the IOH voltage in order to make SLI work?

I know that some values have to be within a certain range of each other and was wondering if IOH had any dependencies.
