Official Asus Rampage III Formula Review/Owners Guide - Page 48

Okay, so I've done some GPU swapping!

First thing I tried: Putting Card 1 in the top slot and Card 2 in the bottom slot. Immediately encountered problems. PC was running very sluggishly, so much so that I didn't even try to boot a game. NCP could not enable SLI, despite the bridge being connected. Card 2 would not register in HW Monitor, but I put my hand near the heat pipes on the side (case is open for testing) and it was significantly hotter than Card 1. Card 2 also would not give readings to GPU-Z.

Second attempt: Using another SLI bridge. No change. SLI bridge is not faulty.

Third attempt: Swapped Card 2 into the top slot, Card 1 in the bottom slot. BSOD on windows startup.

Fourth attempt: Removed Card 1 from the bottom slot, leaving only Card 2 in the top slot. System crash (auto reboot, no BSOD).

Fifth attempt: Removed Card 2 from the top slot and replaced it with Card 1. GPU-Z, HW Monitor, CPU-Z, EVGA Precision, and NCP all reading the card normally. System appears stable (It's how I'm writing this).

Maybe I have a bad graphics card on my hands. I recently bought Card 2 as a recertified item from Newegg.com, so it's a distinct possibility. I'll do more testing with the cards in the top and middle slots after I eat lunch.

Thanks so much for your input, by the way.

after reading your post I just remembered the same exact thing happened to me one time. just like you I had weird colors on the screen so I started swapping out GPU's and using only 1 at a time and they were both fine but when together they would mess up. I was doing the same feeling the heat and like the bottom one wasn't hot etc. Soooo I finally decided it was the board I called microcenter and I was like a few days past the 1 month so I would have to rma with Asus.

So then I decided to build my pc outside the case which is a normal troubleshooting for me when I have something weird like this so it's easier to swap parts around etc. When built outside the case everything was fine!?!?!?!? So I put it back together in the case and it's been fine ever since. That was with SLI 470's by the way and I stepped them up to 570's with EVGA. Never had the problem since. Your last post reminded me about it as I had forgotten.

I know there is nothing definite with what happened to me but taking it apart and putting it back together fixed the issue. No idea why.

The only thing I did after this was to update to bios 0505, not sure if that helped or not but the problem never happened again.

It is my pleasure to help btw!

Still haven't tried the top and middle slots yet (just finished nomnomnoming). My BIOS is up to date (0505).

The crazy thing was, the two cards were working fine with Card 1 in the top slot and Card 2 in the middle slot. The bottom slot was open. 48 fps in Unigine Heaven bench and everything. Not sure that would be possible with a faulty GPU. I think it might be the motherboard's bottom PCIe slot.

That being said, I'll do some testing with the cards in the top two slots and report back.

Edit: +rep for the help!

It sounds exactly like what happened to me. I tried each GPU by itself and it was fine, I bet you would find the same thing but that's the best way to tell.

Well, Card 2 did not work by itself when tested. I'm pretty sure it's the new graphics card and I'm gonna do an RMA with Newegg.

I tried using just the top two slots, testing each card in the top slot with the other in the middle slot. Both configurations led to lockups and driver errors. The only configuration that works now is with Card 1 by itself in the top slot. I guess I had a card that worked for 3 days and then died. Oh well.

I hate to have hijacked the RIIIF thread with a GPU problem. Woops!

I'll post back once I get the new card from RMA, if I can remember. lol

Thanks again for your help.

Hi I'm new to the forums, but I've been trolling this one for a few months now since the RF3 was released. I just wanted to say that I got this board for my new build and am loving it so far. Everything was a breeze to put in, and worked and recognized right off the bat. I did have some BSOD a day or 2 after building it, but I seemed to have figured out the problem. I had the ram set too high. Everything seems to be running stable now after dropping them down to 1.5v.

Just figured I'd give my 2 cents and say this board is fantastic!

Yes, I do 3d animation and rendering/video on it. I was initially going to go w/ just 12gb in 3x4gb sticks, but the same type was on sale for the 24gb-6 pack so I said, wth, why not.

I'm still trying to find the sweet spot for the voltages though. It's either that or the processor voltages. I have that oc'd at the "crazy 4.0" setting. Either way I'm still getting BSOD from one of them when I start running more ram intensive applications. Going to try to play with them tonight.

Anyone with any suggestions please feel free to pipe up.

hmm several pages back I posted my bios template I use with the i7-970 which is similar to your 980x except I have a max mutli at x25. I found from my own testing that I get better performance with bclk at 200 and lower mutli (x21) than by running lower bclk and higher multi, though your mileage may vary. This allows me to run only an x8 ram multi which puts my ram at rated speed. I find that the lower ram multi makes for easier overclocking but that's my findings anyway.

good luck with the overclocking!
