Official Asus Rampage III Formula Review/Owners Guide - Page 50

Hi, Long time reader, first time poster.

I recently have just brought a new machine and built, nothing DOA so thats a start but I do have some concerns which Im hoping you kind people here will be able to assist me with, and hopefully I will learn a thing or two along the way.

Rampage 3 Formula mobo, i7 950 CPU, GTX 570, 6GB 1333Mhz Corsair Cas 9, 1000W Antec True Power Quattro. NZXT Phantom. I have a Zalman CNPS10X performa CPU cooler which Im yet to install.

Ive flashed to the 0505 BIOS. now, the questions.

Leaving everything on the default of AUTO seems to make the CPU draw more then its Max TDP. 145W, voltage 1.2XX. Is this a cause for concern? I dont wish to Over Clock just yet as Im looking just to have everything operating in their recommended areas.

Now, If I set it to manual then specify the BCLK of 133, PCIE 100 and the ratio of 23, it stays @ 3.07Ghz and with the Voltage set to a static 1.0000 it will never go above 130W (as specified on intels site).

Im in a quite hot humid location so my CPU temps with the stock cooler are around 49 - 51C. I did hit 57C when I benchmarked Crysis max settings. GPU @ mid 60's. SB 55C NB 53C mobo 42C (if Im reading everything correct).

anymore info you need, I will provide. Thank you in advance

Sounds like a good plan. I've read all the reports comparing RAM bus speeds, and 1600 is just fine. Is everything running at the XMP (or other) rated timings for that speed?

DUST2DEATH- If you are concerned about power, and keeping your system running stock clocks, leave the CPU multiplier on Auto to enable all of Intel's power management schemes. If you CPU voltage is in the 1.2's on Auto, you may have a chip with a high VID. It's the luck of the draw. If you can pass stability tests undervolted (try 1.15, 1.1...) there is savings to be had, but the benefit of Auto is CPU throttling will lower VID when not under load. It appears you know that. Do NOT use XMP memory profiles, they set the QPI way too high. There are interesting threads on the subject of undervolting, it may be a good option for you.

Man, sorry for a very late reply but if you were to leave everything in auto then that should be just fine (since you don't want to overclock and using Intel's stock cooler).

Hopefully you'd come back and read this. Anyway, since this was also your first post, welcome to OCN.

Hello guys. I got the Asus Rampage III right away and before a list was put out for memory support. I was going a different route on memory and a sale sucked me in. I have had terrible luck with this ram. It is OCZ Gold 2000mhz.

I am going to get different ram. Looks like New Egg pulled the ram and deactivated it.

I was getting memory dumps, had to push power button twice to get it to go, and crashes. I wound up having to put it on Auto to keep it stable as I could. Money has been tight.

I will be getting new ram hopefully in the next 3 weeks. I am looking at the Mushkin Redline series with 3x4gb. I have been dealing with this for a little while and this was recommended to me.

I tried to manually set up the other ram in the bios. Did not like stock settings and under clocked. According to my AI Suite II I am running around 533mhz. Auto is the most stable I have been able to get it.

I have a kick arse machine with a crutch. Is there any reference available setting up the bios. I read through several pages; however, there are so many. I finally just made a post.

Any guidance and recommendations would be great.

The information is definitely here, so keep reading. Clunk.org also has a good living review that I found helpful.

As for memory, I bought this Patriot 12GB kit (sig) that runs very well with this board. I can run tighter timings with these than the recommended settings. Never used that brand before, I was pretty loyal to OCZ after having good results on a 775 build. Sucks to be low on dough, but ram is pretty cheap all things considered.

On the memory question, I have yet to find memory that won't work, but have never used OCZ. I have used Mushkin, A-Data, G.Skill, and Kingston HyperX. From 1600MHz to 2000MHz.

My 775 rig was a Rampage Formula, and I put a beating on that board, it never failed me!

Now with the Rampage III Formula, I love this board!
OC's great!
