XP software FSB tweak for Intel.

Thread Starter
Hi everyone,
I'm really new here.
My daughter told me I really need to drag myself into the 20th century with regard to my home PC, (old K6 thing). She was right, but I'm currently out of work so funds are kinda short. I'm lucky in the sense that I live in Chicago and have a Tiger Direct and an Fry's close by, just little money.

Anyway, I bought a bare bones kit from Tiger Direct which included:
decent mid tower case
450 w PSU
MSI PM8M3-V,
http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p...8M3-V&class=mb
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&sku=M452-2630
Celeron 351 3.2 GHz 256 k cpu, Intel fan.
2x512 Ultra PC3200 DDR

I'm running Windows XP SP2 Home.
Needless to say, I'm now in another world speedwise, and I've cuaght the "bug".

Last week I upped my cpu to a P4 640 with HT and 2mb L2 cache.
Install went smooth and things are really cool now!!

I love to tinker, so I started reading about tweaking.
My BIOS lets me adjust memory timings, so in manual I'm at:
2.5-2-3-6 1T command and 4 bank interleave, (8 bank crashes).
This helped performance above auto by spd at least according to sandra 2004

My BIOS won't let me control vcore and vdimm so I'm kind of limited.

CPU runs ~78F at idle and 95F under full load, so I think my cooling is ok.
I'd like to play with FSB, since multiplier is fixed for my cpu.
I downloaded clockgen. my PLL is:Realtek RTM862-520.
Clockgen supports RTM862-410, so I tried this and it seems to work, but when I raise FSB slightly, I see improvment in cpuz, I can get up to around 850 MHz (~3440MHz core speed) and at that I'm stable for about a few minutes.

I know setting FSB from BIOS is the way to go, and I should probably think about a new board, but at this point if I'm going that route, I might decide to go a completely different route and jump into the AMD pool since AMD seems to be more receptive to tweaking if not performance.

For now, since funds are tight, I really would like to up my graphics first cause I'd like to do do some gaming. I can take the graphics with me when and if I switch to the new AMD rig.

So until I make the switch, (I've already picked out my mobo/cpu), I'd like to know if anyone knows of something similar to colckgen that will support RTM862-520, and will let me play with FSB a little more effectively. Also, If there's a way to control vcore from XP, that would be cool as well.

TIA,

Nuke.

PS,
If anyone needs a chemist in the Chicago area, drop me a line!!!
