Needing some info please

Thread Starter
I have a few questions that I could use some answers for. I've been gaming on a Compaq Presario, 2100+ AMD, 768 MB RAM, and added a FX5200 for graphics about 2 years ago. (Yes yes, I know...it doth suck compared to good machines) I am needing to upgrade because I bought a 6600GT, and it's too fast for my machine...I can get okay OpenGL graphics, but it tears to beat hell on 3D games. (DAoC) So I have pulled it out to wait for a new MOBO etc.

I have a very limited budget, but want to get good bang-buck ratio, with OC ability perhaps, but I am soooo fuzzy on good-better-best CPUwise. I can afford some barebone systems right now, but not willing to buy until I know I am getting something that will last awhile.

So, questions:

Celeron, Celeron-D, P4...what's the big differences? The BB I'm looking at is a Celeron-D 341, Intel D101GGCL mobo, 450w power supply. I'll be buying 1GB ram for whatever system. Is this decent? Not worth it? Is a socket 775 going to be better than a 478?

If anyone can give me a decent breakdown on what I'm looking at (or possibly for) it would be much appreciated.

Just sign me, Noobish in TX

Well, let me start by asking: The 6600 GT is AGP or PCI-Express?

Then we can tell you which MoBo/CPU you cuould use.

If possible, post a link of what you're looking into buying as a BB.

Budget?

and to Overclock.net

He said he bought the 5200 2-3 years ago, AFAIK no 5200 was released in PCI-E so it's safe to assume his 6600 is also AGP as the 5200 was swapped out for it.

Get a 775 mobo, One of the ones that support the new 1066FSB and you'll be happy. Look into a ASROCK DUAL SATA Because it supports AGP and PCI-E so when you decide to upgrade you can get a PCI-E. If your on a budget you can get a cheap low GHZ prescott or a celeron but celerons suck at gaming.

Read that question first.

I tend to belive that he may or may have not an AGP. It's best to know which bus the 6600 GT is before we start getting into a concrete solution.

When in doubt......ask. Never assume because we know what that stands for if you break it down. Till I know than I can give him a real answer.

Thank you for the welcome

Yes it is AGP 3.0 The mobo I have now is 2.0 compliant and while nVidea TS says it will run it, I can't turn it down enough to get it to run.

Granted, I play this game all the time, but I don't have a budget to do a really phenom system at this time..consider this a patch to keep me gaming better than I am at the game I run, but will eventually turn into the 2nd kids computer when I go ballsy.

The BB I'm looking at right now is from tigerdirect.com. (I've dealt with them in the past and they've always stood behind their stuff) Here is the link for one of the systems I am thinking of.

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...945442&CatId=0

I am trying to keep my budget under $250, with 1GB memory, but can stretch to $300 if needed.

You guys start tossing out all those specs and are blowing right over me yes, eventually I will build a rocking gamer, but with 2 kids and a 4 year old computer, I'd rather just get back up to the point where my system doesn't lock up every time 8 more enemies come in range.

You would probably be best off with a sempron/754 mobo. Celerons are about the worst processor ever made when it comes to gaming.

Welll, unfortunately that BB is not going to work, you need a MoBo that will support an AGP slot and that one in particular comes with a PCI-Ex16 slot which is not compatible with your 6600 GT.

Check one with an AGP slot for your 6600 GT.

**edit**

Doesn't seem like you have that many choices in the BB department, this is the only thing I see that would work with your 6600 GT:

I would go with that. It comes with 512 ram already and you can buy another 512 stick in that 6600gt and you are good to go with a cheap and fairly good budget gaming pc. I don't know if you overclock or not but the 3100+ sempron is actually a very good overclocking chip.

I would place my vote for this one.

Coming off my 2100+ which can't OC (at least not in this system) how much faster will this one OC to? I also noticed that it supports Athlon 64s, so I'm going to assume the Sempron is similar, and will hold me for awhile?

Thanks again for all the advice
