400W vs 500W

Thread Starter
I've been slowly building up a new computer over time and I think the next part I'm going to spring for will be the PSU. I've decided on the Enermax Liberty but I'm not really sure if I'll notice a difference between the 400W and the 500W as most people I've talked to say you don't really need more than 400W. My system is as it shows in my CP, but I'm also planning to upgrade my sound card to the Sound Blaster X-Fi Fata1lty FPS and adding a WD 40Gb Raptor as a second HDD. I've never overclocked before, but I'm considering doing so in the near future once I get a good PSU. The 500W is almost double the price of the 400W, so is the 400W good enough? or is the 500W really worth it?

Well the 500 would be better as SLI and crossfire need more Power also 500 watt is more future Proof.

I would go with the 500w, its has more than enough power for this current system, and leaves PLENTY of room for upgrades.

Ya, I usually like to keep the future in mind, one of the main reasons I'm considering the 500W, I know it will last longer. As for the rails, the 500W has 22A for each 12V rail and the 400W has 20A each, which I imagine is still more than enough.

I'd go with the 500W just to be on the safe side. You can never have too much power, or can you?

The only thing that worried me was the massive price difference, but I guess if I go for the 500W I won't be worrying at all when I eventually go for Crossfire and it's just one more part I won't have to change on the next upgrade. Also, this way I get to laugh at my friends who both have 400W liberties when their systems run out of power and mine doesn't!

You say there is only 2 amp difference?. Well then I would not pay the extra $. 2 amp at 12v is only 24w difference. Maby it puts out the rest to the mobo and 5v rails, but that ain't really that interesting.

I would go for another brand, that put some more out on the 12v rails.
As stated above, the egg has one that puts out 33 amps. That's roughly 6-8 HD's extra you can pull then.
