Did I get a "dud" CPU?

Hi all. I am fairly seasoned when it comes to computer hardware but I'm still very new to overclocking and tweaking so please bear with some of my ignorance. I recently purchased an Athlon II X4 640 to put in a gigabyte board (GA-MA78LM-S2) and have dabbled with some overclocking. I must say that from reading numerous other peoples success with 45nm AMD chips I am somewhat disappointed with my results. I can get 3.4ghz on my 640 but it requires almost 1.5v (1.475v somewhat stable) which seems like way too much voltage that SHOULD be needed to get it there. I have read a crap-ton of posts of how people get their athlon's and phenom's to 3.8 stable on stock voltage (1.38-1.4) which makes me wonder if I simply got a dud chip. My temps are awesome (40c under 100% load) and I have NB multiplier down to x9 and memory underclocked to compensate as well. Am I doing something wrong or should I contact AMD for a possible replacement?

That doesent make sense. Your going to call AMD because the product you bought is not as good as YOU thought YOU could make it?

Some cpu's are just not up for over clocking. Its all luck-of-the-draw.

My athlon took more voltage to get a lower OC than my Phenom does.

My Athlon 630 took 1.475V to get a 3.65ghz overclock.

My Phenom 1055t takes 1.44V to get a 3.83ghz overclock.

Just a difference in the chips I'd assume.

Also, make sure you're feeding your RAM enough voltage. If you don't, you'll have to give your CPU more voltage to feed the IMC to help compensate (and that's not a good thing).

shouldve went intel for the superior overclocking platform, much greater voltage headroom and lower stock vcores and a 10 degree higher thermal ceiling.(celsius)

No system is the same, it's never a guarantee you'll get the same results as others.

No objection here as to Intels overclocking better, I mean what else are you paying close to double the cost of an AMD for?

Make sure your memory NB and HT have enough voltage, because if stuff isnt at where it should be it normally does take a hgiher voltage to get a lower clock

I think your mobo may have something to do with it.

You have a very value-minded 760G board.
Some lower end gigabyte boards have inaccurate voltage settings. I know my GA-MA78G-DS3H did.
SPCR also had an issue with a board
