Project: Office Fire

Thread Starter
So my mother finally is getting rid of her 9 year old dell dimension

but she was going to buy another pre-built and thats where i stopped her.

so she commissioned me to build her a computer that she could use for another 8 years at the maximum. but it had to stay around a stiff budget of $1000

thats where the build starts.

parts day

An AMD Phenom II 1055T hopefully can muscle it out for at least 8 years.

4GB of ram with the cpu in frame. should be enough for a few years. i'll probably be back to slap in another 4 sometime in the future.

1055T socketed.
fun fact, this is the first AMD cpu i've put in a socket since my last AMD build which was a K5 back in the 90's. good times.

Heres the motherboard with cpu and heatsink mounted.
i bought my mother the 212+ for her birthday.

Heres the case which wasn't exactly what i wanted, but should do nicely.
haven't mounted the fans yet in this picture.

And here is the system running at around 98% completion. i need to run up to radio shack to pick up a fan header cable. i don't have anywhere to plug that last case fan in

Heres the sickly P10k result acheived by this rig

a far cry from the P50k my sig rig pulls.

Final system specs:
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-790XTA-UD4
CPU: AMD Phenom II 1055T
GPU: XFX 5770
RAM: Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) 1600MHz 7-8-7-20
Power Supply: Corsair TX750
Hard Disk: Samsung EcoGreen F2 1TB
DVD/CD Drive: LG GH22LS50
Case: Cooler Master Elite 430
Monitor: Acer G205HBBD
Mouse: Kensington K72356US
Keyboard: Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard 4000
Extra Case Fans: Cooler master R4-S2S-124K-GP 4 pack
OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium

Grand Total: $957.88 ($1,060 with shipping and tax pre-MIR) roughly $1,000 after MIR's

A side note:
The keyboard i received was defective. out of everything that could have been defective, its the keyboard lol.
some of the keys are non-functional.
going to send it back today and hopefully get another one soon.

All in all i had quite a bit of fun assembling this machine. and its definitely going to be fun figuring out how to tweak the memory up to its max spec later.

Now for a sentence that might make some of you rage...
the purpose of this machine is email, youtube, and general usage
but it needs to hold up to that for 8+ years.

That will be a kickass PC for a mother. I know she won't take advantage of everything but for 8 years... yea that will last.

You'll get 8 years out of that, easy. Might be some upgrades over the life of the machine, but all in all it will be fine.

Out of curiosity - why did you choose to go with a dedicated GPU and 750w PSU, considering the intended usage of the machine?

This. Just get a mobo with IG and be done with it. Chances are if she's not playing in Blender or playing games, she doesn't need a discrete GPU.

the 5770 and the TX750 are in here because of combos on the other parts. i got them for much cheaper than they are regularly.

i basically didn't pay for the ram or 5770 because of the deals.

and who knows where they are going with GGPU functionality. so thats one of the reasons i got a 5770.

also, i updated the op with the vantage run

If the PSu isn't working as hard (near it's max wattage) it will last longer
