AM2 a dud... - Page 2

This could well lead to AMD reducing the *high* prices on their dual core processors which even when compared to Conroe will be very mainstream capable platforms.

The enthusiast community will find a great move to Conroe but it all depends on AMD's marketing schemes to deal with Conroe.

I believe that if the AMD dual cores are 80% that of a Conroe (Ghz/Ghz) they will still maintain a selling profit to the mainstream of society. Considering all the high priced sales of their dual cores one can presume that R & D has been long since paid for and now it is pretty clear profit so a price lowering would make good marketing sense.

I never thought the AM2 or DDR2 would make much if any difference and had some reservations of DDR2 even holding back the on chip memory controller latency issue.

For AMD to make any real crossroads with an architecture that competes with Conroe they will need more than a cpu form factor change and illogical memory controller refresh. I believe that Intel needed more than their refreshes of P4 to really compete with AMD and now the shoe is on the other foot. Netburst could never really match the PPW (Power per Watt) or PPT (Power per Tick) of AMD even though they provided a valiant effort.

AM2 is not a dud, it is merely a way for AMD to move onto DDR2. They are the still K8 CPUs, still the same as have been on sockets 754 and 939. All AM2 brings is DDR2 support for the K8 CPU, it does not promise OMG***BBQ performace increases - so why are people so dissapointed? Its like everyone moaning about Vista needing more RAM and new graphics cards to run it! Why are people so opposed to change!?!

amd needs to lose the pins off of the processor and put them on the motherboard like intel did with the 775 series

AMD is doing that with socket F. It has something like 1207 contact points and will be built on Land Grid Array (LGA) like the Intels are now.

AMD is going to release soem kick ass processors, you just wait.

BTW, this is the third or fourth time I have seen this thread, almost all exactly the same with the quote from Anandtech, lol.

Your observation provides no data or other logical information. Why post it?

Keep in mind AMD is getting 35W and 65W on 90nm. We'll just have to wait and see how they overclock. And personally, I think if AMD released 65nm it would smoke intel with low power consumption.

i think am2 is a bluff from amd... since conroe is realistically still a year off... they already have a new socket done.. and can now focus on their 65 nm process along with the integration of dd3. am2 is a more of a tune up than an upgrade.

According to both AMD and Intel roadmaps, Intel will be well on its way to producing 45nm Conroe chips when AMD gets their 65nm chips running (Q1 2007). Also Intel perfected its 65nm line using the old P4 and other netburst processors. AMD is going to have to get their 65nm running on a new production line. Normally a trasition to a smaller die size does not work out to well it that manner.

Conroe will be released in July, that is only 3 months away, or about 1/4 of a year.

there will be a mad shortage and you know it... it will be at least christmas before there are enought chips to please everyone. But... conroe is gonna be very nice with a very attractive price... i am not bashing either company.
