sata slow down... - Page 2

Thread Starter
Well at least I know I'm not alone. I'm pretty sure it's a SATA 1, I got it from my friends DELL and he had that DELL for a while. What program could I use to see if the hard drive is going bad?

Just a guess... but could it be that the fact that the IDE and the SATA drives are on different controllers play a role? Perhaps that puts a heavy burden on the system bus and thus on the CPU?

Also, you can read the S.M.A.R.T. information in Speedfan, or with utilities that are provided by most major hard drive manufactorers. This information will give you an indication about the health of the drives.

Well the fact that they Run on different Controllers would make little difference, I have no problems transfering my files from IDE to SATA whatsoever. I would use the SMART checking utility in a program called Speedfan to check the Health of both HDD'S.

Enterprise: You're right. I guess I was not thinking clearly. I copy files from my IDE CD-ROM to my SATA hard drive all the time without problems. Check the S.M.A.R.T. information.

Oh right Well i thought you meant Data from one IDE hdd to a SATA hdd... Well it makes more sense now as transfering data from a Dvd/cd rom to a HDD of anykind will use up quite abit of your system Resources as its Accesing and copying Data at the same Time. Good luck in the future.

It's not me who has the problem with copying from hard drive to hard drive. Commander Kool has that problem. I was just pointing out that my post about different controllers was indeed incorrect, as you said, by giving the example that I copy from CD to hard drive without problems.

Commander Kool: how's the performance if you copy from IDE CD to SATA hard drive? If this does not give trouble, the IDE hard drive is the likely suspect.

Good luck

Oh i see i have Misunderstood..Sorry. Well all i can think is that it must be a bad HDD so check the SMART in speedfan. Also make sure that all the settings in the bios are correct for the SATA. Infact something that Springs to mind is the SATA drives do not like Overclocks very much..are you overclocked ?

could be the Ide to sata transfer, I've had a few problems with that too, i have a mini backup drive 4gb ide and my maxdiamond sata1 and when i transfer between the two, i cant do anything else..., but transfers between optical drive or flash drives are fine.I think it may be normal.

Update:
I will test later when I hook up the ide drive to check the cpu usage at that point.

Well transfers Between Optical Drives and a HDD you will notice a slight Slowdown but stumpped to why IDE to SATA HDD transfers are using alot of system Resources.
