Best OS for OLD Laptop

Thread Starter
I got a laptop to clean up and upgrade. It's a really old laptop: Intel Pentium 3 995MHz, 240MB RAM.

Honestly, If I were the owner I'd just buy a new laptop, this is legacy. But she wants it reformatted and wants me to add RAM if possible.

Anyways, how does Win 7 perform on old laptops? I've always been putting Win XP on old laptops but I heard Win 7 surpassed XP in terms of performance and is pretty lightweight with all the bells and whistles turned off.

So.. XP or Win7?

I personally put Ubuntu on my old laptop, little hard to get used to, but made it usable at least

Windows 7's stated minimum requirements are a 1 GHz processor and 1 GB RAM. I'd put Ubuntu on it, personally. If windows is an absolute requirement, I'd stick with XP.

I don't think the owner would like ubuntu and getting used to it would be a pain for them. Windows 7 Basic it is. Thanks.

Ubuntu is at least as much of a resource hog as 7.

I'd use 7 though. A P3 is not far off from an atom, and those run 7 no sweat.

The lack of RAM will be a pain, but this is the perfect situation to try out readyboost.

Get a low-key Linux distro. I like Fedora, or any of the number of distros touting small resource requirements.

On my laptop, w7 uses ~625MB of ram out of 2GB.

So if you can upgrade to 512, you would be absolutely fine.

As much as a resource hog as 7? your joking right? In all honestly i would take 7 over Ubuntu any day just because i know windows better than any distro of Linux, but at the same time i know Linux will run 10x smother on a crappy computer than 7 will...

This is just coming from my experience of unbearably slow windows 7 on my backup pc to barely bearable performance in Ubuntu on the same computer.
