Buzzing sound from the power supply?

Thread Starter
I've been hearing this buzzing sound from my power supply and i was wondering if this is something i should worry about. I didnt notice the sound until i was close to the power supply. The sound is not particular loud, but its not particular quite either.

I know its the power supply because I isolated from everything else. Also it is not the fan that is making the sound because i stopped it to see if there was a difference in sound and there wasn't.

I also wanted to point out that when the computer is turned off the power supply makes that same buzzing sound but you can really only hear it if you have your ears on the power supply. when I turn on the computer its louder. Surprisingly, you would think the sound would be louder when under load but it isn't.

So again, what do you guys think the problem is and is it something I should worry about.

Generally, it means that either the capacitors are buzzing which usually isn't something to be worried about. The other option is that you have coil whine which means the coils in the transformer of the PSU are vibrating. The fix for that is to get some clear lacquer and spray it. Either way, I don't think it's anything to be concerned about but yeah, it can get annoying. Try and get it RMA'd

Surprisingly, the sound isn't bothering me. I can't really hear it over my fans. Would it be worth it to go through all that trouble of RMA'ing it if i don't really notice the sound?

I agree with nrgx.A small buzz from a psu is pretty much normal,I wouldn't worry to much about it.If it's not too inconvenient you could consider an rma but,you may get one back that does the same thing. If you have had it 3 years then I would consider replacing it,otherwise I'm sure it will be fine.

You should be fine. Only change if the sound ends up annoying you.

haha. i had the exact same question when i had my psu open and running earlier today.

I am using a desktop power supply for a DIY project. I am controlling my loads with PWM. When I change the frequency of my PWM I hear a proportional sound coming out of my power supply similar to what you guys describe. I thought this was interesting.
The lower the frequency was, the louder the sound was. While switching my loads at 10Hz, I think I tripped a thermal switch because after about 5 minutes the supply stopped producing voltage and the fan stopped. The sound was noticeable at about 10Hz. I was only pulling about 2 Amps at about 50 Watts total (from a 300W supply). Thankfully after a while I turned the power supply back on and it seems fine. I won't be doing that again. Seems to me that any noticeable sound is BAD! RMA or return that stuff! Dont risk it!
