Cheapest possible gaming rig?

Thread Starter
I'm making a gaming rig for my little brother. He will mostly play racing games and such, like GRID and DIRT. I know those are kind of intensive, but he doesn't need AA or max settings, although I do want it to look decent. What would be the cheapest possible set up?

I was thinking about buying a 775 cpu to save money, but is that even worth it now? Should I go for a little extra and get a 1156?

thanks!

Where you gonna be buying from and what budget, both really help us to see what the best kit is we can get you.

Well I'd be buying from newegg, budget is around $600-$700 and I can squeeze in a few hundred more if it would make a big difference, but otherwise I wanna save as much as possible.

Prefer to go intel too just because I have a bunch of intel computers so if a mobo or cpu goes bad it's easy to test. If AMD makes a big price difference though I guess I'll go AMD. Remember though this is just for gaming.

The am3 dual core setup will be your best choice for a budget gaming build. But if you say you're budget is $700 and you can possibly squeeze in a few hundred more? That's a possible build for an i5/i7

AMD will give you a better bang for your buck. An Athlon X2 would be good.

I'd go with an i5 build or a AM3 build. The i7 is not needed for just playing some games.

Allright so can someone recommend a AM3 cpu with a micro-atx mobo? Cheapest combo that's still suitable for playing new games.

And what about video card? I was thinking GTX460 since they are going cheap now.

A 955 with a cheap mobo

Focus more on the GPU than the CPU. A GTX 460 will suit your needs.

Holy crap, a $150 CPU? I could get a i3 for less than that. Is that worth it, just for games?
