AMD's new Socket AM2: it's no Conroe-killer, but it's not supposed to be - Page 2

The thermal output will be insanely low. I cant imagine the clocks with alternative cooling(chiller, tec, phase ect.)

1-2% on the CPU tests..? /is that an upgrade?

That test has been discussed. It was done with an experimental CPU and mother board. A finallized version of the products can't help but be more of an increase than than what anandtech had.

Plus computer components are getting so powerfull and fast these days that a 1-2% increase is pretty good...and till we have the next big break through discovery, I really don't see things going up by leaps and bounds any more.

Its nice to see AMD finally coming out with a 4000+ X2 with 2x1MB cache at 2GHz, up until now (and until AM2 is out) you had to get the ~$500 4400+ if you wanted a Toledo core with 2MB cache when a ~$340-400 4000+ would be awesome, anybody can overclock the CPU but you can't ever add cache to your CPU, thats why my AMD rig has the 4400+ Toledo in it.

Vagrante Storm... I see the next paradigm shift coming from these magnetic CPUs or whatever, I've been hearing alot about them and they sound very promising.

Magnetic Domain-Wall Logic, thats what its called.

It would be interesting to see the AM2 with DDR2-1066 compared to an 939 with DDR-500. I would consider these the standards now with new builds. I imagine they would be comparable again, but the AM2 might show a little more legs over the socket 939 processors. Glad to see "benchmarks" that back my logic driven speculation of the socket AM2 for those that doubted, and I will not name any names *cough*Jori*cough*.

As far as low thermal output, what elase is different form the old 3800+ X2 and the new 3800+ X2? What about cache is is going to be 1mb istead of 512?

I doubt it. If they do that, they will need to raise the price AND make a new budget chip... possibly a sempron line of dual-core chips. I don't see why not... they could get good money out of them. Respectively:
Sempron 64 X2 3000+
Sempron 64 X2 3200+
Sempron 64 X2 3400+
Sempron 64 X2 3600+

Each with 256-512k

anandtechs review shows almost no improvement over current 939 processors as of mid march. There wont be enough time to either to come out with new silicon. conroe is going to **** all over am2. AMD isnt going to comeback til sometime in 07.

People are forgetting two major things.

1) The conroe sucks just as bad. The current Athlons kicked its a$$ in the benchmarks that used MORE than its 4mb L2 cache. So that means ALL games except Solitare and maybe minesweeper are gunna blow on the conroe.

2) The AM2 test motherboards are PROTOTYPES; that means that they're no where near the real performance of what they'll be like when we get them. AND they used DDR666 or whatever it was - not DDR800. Sure the timings are way out there; but give it a couple months of consumer buying and the big memory companys like OCZ, G-Skill and Corsair will ram those timings down. Forgive the pun.

I may seem like a Fan boy - but AMD crap all over Intel. 9 Ops per cycle for AMD against 6 for Intel. Oh, and dont forget intels 31 stage pipeline and AMD's 12.

For people like me, yes. And it might be cheap for a short time.
For people with 3500+ or better chips, not a good upgrade.

They are actually keeping the socket 754 after they eiliminate the 939. The reason being that the mobile platform is on that socket. So I do not see the Sempron or similar changing sockets just yet.
