Windows XP 64bit doesnt actually mean it displays 64bit Colours. 64 BIT is the different Code processing method within the operating system. You also need a 64bit CPU to run in 64bit mode.

Just check to make sure you can get drivers for all your componets, and if you can, there will be a definate performance boost in going to the 64-bit Windows, especialy in normal desktop use. (Look forward to even more if upgrading from Windows 2000.)

the reviews that I have read seem to be of the opinion that x64 doesnt run 32bit games as well as 32bit XP

Some of the current games have come out with patches to go 64bit. The new games that are coming out will say if they are 64bit.
