My first overclock. Successful?

Thread Starter
So, I have been working on this all day and all night, and I think I might be at the breaking point... I'm not sure how to spot instability beyond crashes, freezes, and pauses, but here's what I've got:

I clocked my Athlon II x4 640 3.0GHz quad core to 3.36GHz:

Clocks-
CPU: 3358.86MHz
BUS: 224MHz
HT Link: 2015.31MHz
Multiplier: 15
RAM: 1188MHz
CPU V: 1.400V

CPU Idle: 31 C
CPU Load: 47 C

I've got the RAM clocked down, cause I didn't want to push it just yet. I feel like I'm at a wall with the CPU. I'm running stable (haven't done a full on 3 hour stress test with a game yet) but if I put the FSB at 225 and run the stress test, I get a freeze. I'm not sure I should push the voltage any more, cause it already seems high, but from what I read, this one pulls a lot of watts.

I'm kind of stuck here, which is cool, cause I've just got a zalman copper fan, but I was wondering if anything sticks out here that someone could point out for me like the HT link or anything (which I didn't touch). Remember it's my first overclock so nothing is obvious for me. I feel like I should be able to get this thing to 3.8 if I had the right cooling...

Anyways, I'm not sure if this is an indication of instability or not, but MoH Beta still seems tiny bit (I mean like in a subconscious way) choppy. I can barely notice it, but there's something about it that's not as smooth as I seem to remember from before the tests.

Also, I finally got a decent frame rate on the 3dMarkV CPU physics test. It was averaging 4FPS before the OC, now it's around 17-20FPS. Dont' know what my score is yet, paying for the upgrade right now.

Thanks guys.

Good job man! I suggest looking up the max voltage for that cpu (google) and making sure you aren't over it. Also, if you have room pump some more juice into that baby and overvolt it!

Congrats on the overclock!

Yeah, 1.4v isn't too high for that chip. You can definitely give it some more volts. I had a athlon II x3 425 un locked to a quad running about 1.52 at 3.8. Their is also more to OC'ing than just increasing FSB and your v core also. But yeah, a little more vcore would definitely help trying to get it stable. Its a pretty mild overclock and 1.4v isn't bad.

Also, is this your BIOS or cpu-z reporting 1.4v? If its cpu-z reporting 1.4v then what is it set at in your BIOS? Some boards have some pretty bad v droop.

EDIT: Just checked amd's site. They have a reccomendation of 1.425 for a max voltage, but some more experienced OC'ers will be in here soon hopefully and be able to help you out a little better than i can. But anyways here is the specs sheet on that cpu.

Oh and you temps are fine and you have plenty of OC room yet running at that temp.

EDIT #2 Just saw that in your sig it says you unlocked L3 cache. That means that the chip is a phenom that amd disabled the L3 cache on to make the athlon. Phenom's have a max of around 1.55v max. Wait till some more experienced OC'ers come and help ya out. Im alright but theirs guys out there that can tell you what to set your cpu v core, nb speed, nb voltage and all that

Oh and i believe your sig is too long. Just fill out the system specs in your user cp and you can take all that out of your sig

Cpu is reporting 1.392V and it's set to 1.4V. I did read an overclock review on this chip pushed to 1.55V with the FSB at 252. There was some serious cooling, and that was only a benchmark and stress test, so I'm sure that wouldn't have held up over time.

Thanks for the tips and will do on the siggy Just didn't see right off the bat where the settings were thanks

No problem i see that you are new here welcome to ocn and glad to have you with us! Ill help you a little more tomorrow with the oc but try bumping up to 1.425 and trying to boot at that fsb you tried earlier. Im heading to bed now tho but will help ya tomorrow
oh and i also left you your first rep for a decent first timers oc! It can get quite confusing but having that oc stable is good but u can defintely push it further i see alot of these chips around the 3.6 mark

Thanks for the rep Josh you're a big help already. i'll definitely give it a try tomorrow afternoon. Soon as I find that fine line, i'll go start running tests and post the results.

Hey, just checkin up to see how its going. Did you run some stress tests and such and try OC'ing a little more? I haven't seen any results yet so whats up!?

Thanks for checking in Josh. I have been working hard on this, and I've got some good results. I OC'd to 3.6 at 1.425Vcore and 240 FSB. It seems perfectly stable with no glitches, pauses or halts. I don't think I'm finished here, as my Tcore is only 37C on load!! not sure why I'm getting a better temp than I did stock... maybe it's because I wasn't tuned, but I'm surprised at that. Makes me wonder if the core sensors might be stuck?

Anyways, it's passed several stress tests, including a 3 hour run on AMD's overdrive tests (just to run the tests, I promise) and the prime95 test didn't seem to even hit the load as hard as BFBC2 did.... is there a newer test I can run?

I think it's on to the RAM now. I have 1866 sticks, but I have to overclock to reach those speeds with this mobo. I'm at 1598 atm, but I'll post in another forum for the timings (i am totally lost)....

So far, it looks like 3.6 is nothing for this thing... I'm still afraid to pass the voltage limit we talked about, at least for a 24/7 oc.

Thanks again for your help!
