Project "Tight-fit" (H50 in the GD05)

Thread Starter
It's that time that we all look forward to again - a new rig!

My criteria for this build was to create a space saving but still relatively powerful m-atx system that I could integrate into my hi-fi rack. I decided to try out the SilverStone GD05 which (with a couple of small modifications) will hopefully fit 2 HDDs and an H50. By default the GD05 has 3x12cm intake fans and utilises positive pressure to force air out of the rear grill. I'm going to fit the H50 in intake mode over the single left-side grill.

The GD05 has room for 2 x 3.5" HDDs, however in order to fit the H50 I'm going to have to forfeit the front bay. It's not a problem though, as I've decided to use a Lian Li EX-553 drive bay adapter so that I can fit a slot load laptop DVD drive and a second HDD in the single 5.25" bay.

I'm replacing my Lian Li PC6070, which has served me well for six years. I'm sad to see it go, but it's a bit bulky for my current needs.

Parts List:

SilverStone Grandia GD05
Asus M4A785TD-M EVO
Phenom II 955BE (Thanks Fallen Angel -X!)
4GB G-Skill Eco CL7
Palit GTX460 768MB
Nexus NX-5000 R3 530W PSU (The most important piece!)
Corsair H50
WD Green 500GB (For now, SSD impending)
Pioneer DVR-K06 slimline Slot Load DVD+/-RW
Lian Li EX-553 Slimline Optical 5.25" Drive Bay Adapter
PWM fan extension for H50
Zalman RC56 7V resistors for the case fans.

A couple of shots of the GD05 out of the box. I like the sleek look - no windows or flashing lights!

In order to utilise an H50 for this build I had to do some searching for a special PSU. Pretty much all ATX PSUs have a depth of at least 15cm, however using an H50 leaves a maximum of only 14cm for the PSU. I found the Nexus NX-5000 which is a decent enough PSU and crucially is only 12.5cm deep. As an added bonus, it's also extremely quiet. Here it is pictured next to my old Corsair TX650:

Before fitting the H50 I'm going to have to remove the screw-thread for one of the feet and one of the cable tie things as they are in the way.

After cutting and filing:

I'm also going to have to remove one side of the second HDD bracket which I will not be using.

Filed so not sharp, but not too fussed as it will be out of sight.

I had to make a shroud for the H50 fan as the tubes weren't quite long enough to reach. I just cannabilised the spare case fan. This shows the gap between the PSU and the H50 once fitted.

And here is an external view. The location of the buttons on the front panel prevent the H50 rad from being monuted directly over the grill so I had to drill some new mounting holes a couple of cms towards the rear.

Here is the Slot-load DVD fitted to the Lian Li adapter with space underneath for another HDD.

I had to make a small hole around the back in order to wire up the front USB port.

This is a shot with everything fitted! There is a bit of a jumble of unused wires from the PSU bundled up underneath the DVD drive. They're okay at the moment, however when I come back to this soon to add an SSD I may hack-off the unused wires depending on how adventurous I feel at the time!

Now some shots of the finished product. My light really highlights the brushed finish of the front panel, but it's much more subtle in person.

In situ in it's new home. It will soon be joined by the rest of my AV kit - the monitor will be returning to my desk though!

And finally some quick performance figures. This is just at stock - I'm going to overclock this weekend and will also play with the configuration of the fans if needed. As it stands though, stress testing gives me...

CPU - 29C idle / 47C Max (After 30 mins Prime 95)

Gpu - 33C idle / 67C Max (After 30 mins Kombuster, fan only 61% at 68C using custom ramp in Afterburner). I'm looking forward to seeing how far this card can go!

Overall I'm very happy. If you made it this far then congratulations and thanks!

Thanks! Keyboard is this - I wouldn't like to use it to write a report or something but it serves its purpose well.

Nice work ...I take it the right rear intake would not work due to the depth of the fan+H50 being to great and running into the mobo right?

Yeah, exactly that. It would have been nice there, but the mobo is tight with those side fans. Oh and I won't get close to your score, but I'll take your challenge when I'm done oc'ing!
