3D Surround Build help/questions

Alright guys so here it is I am currently doing research for my little bro who wants me to build him a 3d surround gaming rig. The price point is roughly 3000 although with 3 3d ready monitors the tower price point is more around 2000. I know this is an expensive build but saving money is still a priority. Also before someone says it I know this should be water cooled but with my bro being in the army and leaving for long periods of time watercooling is just not an option and one more thing for him to mess with. Oh almost forgot games i know that will be running are LFD 1/2, WOW, Starcraft2, RE5, and more than likely BC2 and Metro2033 possibly. This is what ive got picked out so far.

Monitor x3- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824009222

Motherboard- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131665 (although I am considering one of the 4 way sli boards because 3 way sli is a very real possiblity and it would be nice to have the extra space between the cards since watercooling is out of the question)

Processor- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-211-_-Product (also consitering a 930 as i live close to a microcenter and can pick one up for $200
although I am a little concerned that a quad core might bottleneck the system especially if we get tri sli going so i am consitering the 970 also

GPU- ok GTX 470 with the real possibility of tri sli or sli gtx 480s as they both cost about the same (will adjust budget for whats needed to drive the monitors well)

Memory- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-102-_-Product

PSU- Im kicking back and forth between 1000 and 1200w psus these are the ones im looking at
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371036
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-055-_-Product
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-032-_-Product

HD- not shure yet prolly one or two 1 or 2tb hds and a velociraptor sataIII drives no ssds as they are to pricy for me still as far as price/gb

Case- Ok im having some trouble with this one there are too may to list that im consitering but basicly im looking at the Lian LI PC-B70 Cosmos S and HAF X alot will depend on if we go tri sli and need the extra cooling from a HAF

CPU Cooling- no Idea yet open to suggestions currently have ha h50 that ive moved around between processors and seem to like it

Ok so im looking for any imput some of you gurus mite have (espically on cooling this beast) also if someone is running a 3d surround set up i would love some benches. Ive been looking but I havent been able to find many. From what i can tell you basicly loose 50% performance running 3d surround but there arnt many benches to go by. Thanks all in advance for your imput/suggestions FYI ive got a month to plan this build starting Oct 12 so ive got some time (hoping the new ATI series will drop and push gtx 4xx cards down in price)

your setup sounds good. I would get the 930 and overclock it and save some money. get the antec 1200 psu. for your gpu's i would get dual sli with 480

I would definitely go with sli'd 480s, that would most likely produce a little less heat and consume slightly less power than the 3 gts 470s. It would also give you the room to upgrade to a third if/when the time comes. If your concerned in everything fitting in a case such as the cosmos S, see my build, you shouldn't have too much trouble.
I would recommend water cooling though, if you plan on getting all of this equipment. The 480's produce a more than generous amount of heats and so will an i7 of any kind.

you can't use that 1kw antec psu unless you have an antec 1200, P183, or P193 (of which you did not list in your list of possible cases). but i do suggest the cooler master 1200w. the rest of the build looks good. go for a gtx480 sli (and possible tri-sli in the future). also get an ssd...might as well since you're already spending this much. the ssd does make a huge difference, trust me.

Thanks for your imput were you pushing it to fit that mobo set up in your case? do you have a bit of room left? Hows the cooling in that case? I know water cooling is the best option but like i said idk how well it would be watched over with my brother in and out so much.

Hmm i didnt know that about thant antec 1k psu. I have been leaning twards the coolermaster tho as i have heard good things about it. I do like the gtx 480 sli set up just not sure if its worth the extra right off the bat. What do you think about going with a 4 way sli board to give me some extra space in between the cards for cooling? As for the ssd ive never personaly had one but ive heard good things bout the second gen controllers. Im still just on the edge on price/gb the 600gb SATAIII velociraptor drives are only like $250. The extra speed with this level of build would be nice tho FYI i for got to mention what ever case i get will prolly get modded to help with cooling and looks. Ill be sure to throw up a full build log with pictures when i get things going

The cooling is pretty good. I have no problems with airflow as I have loaded the case to the gills with 120 mm fans and it sits next to my airconditioner. The cosmos s may not be the ideal case for someone with an sr-2 (and/or 3 or more video cards), however the mobo fits very well, almost like it was made for the case, with the obvious exception of the inadequate amount of expansion slots. On the other hand, I have 2 video cards at the moments so I have no problems what so over with my build in this case. The case itself is huge and is designed pretty well for watercooling, (there are better watercooling cases, though)but most importantly it looks damn cool!

yes get the cooler master one. worth the extra price for the higher efficiency; also ive always liked cm and their stuff

i would probably try the gtx480 sli for now (tri-sli later); especially if you want to do 3d surround. imho, 2x gtx470s are not going to cut it if you want decent framerates, especially in metro 2033 and other new games coming out (ie. crysis 2?).

getting a 4x sli board MIGHT be a waste of money as the classy is a good $150+ more expensive than that asus you linked. imho, it's not worth the extra ~1-5C worth of cooling. that's another reason why i recommend gtx480; less cards = less heat (and the performance of 2x gtx480 blows that of the gtx470s).

an ssd makes all the difference, especially for the os. they're not even that expensive either. just get a 60gb or 90gb vertex ii or corsair c300 and you'll be set. then just raid0 the velocis and you get 1200gb for games / storage / etc.

aight! cant wait
