CPU cooler, need thermal paste?

so iv never put in a cpu or a cooler, not even in my computer repair class, which seems odd. i dont really know the deal with thermal paste. do i need it? how do i put it on? what if i dont? does it come with some? are my cooler and cpu compatible? why are we here?

that cooler has some applied
all you do is put it on and yes its supported
if you dont put any on the cpu will over heat as the paste fills in the gaps between the heatsink and the cpu

Yes,thermal paste is a must for proper contact between the cooler and CPU surface,just apply a small BB sized dot on the middle of the CPU and place the cooler over it. Pressure from the heatsink will spread the thermal paste.
EDIT-the thermal stuff on the cooler is good for stock CPU settings.

^^ that/ unless it has visible heat pipes on the bottom of it like the dark knight then you will need 2 lines about half the length in the center.
