Cancer is solely a man-made disease caused by lifestyle factors like pollution and diet, according to a new study by Manchester University.
The scientists have investigated ancient Egyptian and Greek remains, as well as their literature, looking for signs people at that time suffered from the disease.
They managed to diagnose cancer in an Egyptian mummy for the first time – but they say finding just one case after examining hundreds of mummies proves the disease was extremely rare in antiquity.
They also found very few references to the symptoms of cancer in ancient literature
There has been a huge increase in cases of the disease since the Industrial Revolution, in particular childhood cancer – which researchers say proves the rise is not simply due to people living longer.
