Crossfire: X1900XT and X1900XTX

Thread Starter
OK, I'm in the process of upgrading my system, and with the new motherboard, etc., comes a new PCI-E GFX card. I want to get an X1900XTX, but if the crossfire version is not much more expensive then I don't see any reason not to get it. However, looking on Newegg, there doesn't seem to be crossfire capable X1900XTX or X1900XTs, just an X1900. My questions are with regards to what can actually be put into crossfire mode, and aspects of it:

- Are all the newer ATI GFX cards crossfire ready? (If not, where do I get them since newegg doesn't have any?)
- If the cards are crossfire ready, do I just get a crossfire ready motherboard, a high power supply, and plug them in?
- Will ATITool still be good for overclocking crossfire cards, both when they are in crossfire mode and not?
- Assuming that not all cards are crossfire capable, is there a performance difference between say an X1900XTX crossfire card running by itself and a regular non-crossfire X1900XTX?
- How much performance gain is obtained from putting two cards in crossfire mode over the same card that is running by itself (such as 50%, 60%?)

IMO crossfire is useless for such a powerful card as the x1900 at this point in time. BY the time you have enough $$$ to buy a second x1900 there will be hardware advancements that will be incompatible with x1900 technology, so all you will be left with is a powerful system that can run sm3.0 games and unable to run sm4.0 games.

You're better off getting a non-sli mobo, saving the $$$ for the next best dx10 card which will come out sometime in december. For now, one x1900 is MORE than enough to gobble up anything you throw at it. By the time games will need 2 x1900's there will be dx10 cards that perform just as good as 2 x1900's, cost about the same as one x1900 and can run sm4.0 and all the other goddies that the x1900 or any card of this generation will not be able to run.

What power supply wattage should I purchase to be able to easily overclock the X1900XTX then? Also, what is the express 3200 chipset?

To run CrossFire you will need 1 X1900XT OR X1900XTX as the slave and a CrossFire master card. On newegg they added a new card (X1800GTO) so the X1900 Cross Fire moved to the next row of GPUs, if you're confused then here is a link for the Cross Fire master cards.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...SubCategory=48

Any one of those in the link above paired with a regular X1900XT or X1900XTX will run in CrossFire on a CrossFire motherboard.

As far as power supplies go, I reccomend my Seasonic S12-600, it is a very good PSU and very quiet to boot and only $150 which is a good deal IMO.

Are you keeping your CPU or buying a new one? If so, which one are you getting, if you tell me this I can help you find a compatible motherboard for CrossFire.

Lastly, CrossFire is worth it IMO if you have the money, it won't DOUBLE your FPS but it will improve it greatly especially at higher resolutions with high levels of AA and AF.

This seems to be legit but it is not currently the case, it's supposed to be true of future catalyst driver releases but it's not functional right this minute.

I plan on purchasing the Pentium D 950 Pressler when it's price halves after the 23rd of April.
http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16819116240

I have been looking for compatible crossfire motherboards for that processor, but few have dual channel DDR2 533/667 RAM capabilities with at least a 4GB capacity, which is what I am looking for.
