8 pin ATX connector ???

Thread Starter
Hi,

I am building a PC from bits. I have bought a new MOBO (Gigabyte GA-K8N Pro-SLI) and CPU (Athlon 3000) and the rest of my parts are: Case Jeantech V3, PCU -***PCU Delta-DPS-600NB (from HP workstation xw8200)***, value RAM 2x512, 120g ATA HD & nv 6800.
So my problem is I have cut to peaces my Case to fit that gaint PCU and realised that there are no 4 pin ATX_12V/ATX but I have a 8 pin plug see below.

I was thinking to power it up some how and test it to see if I can get 2x12V out of 8 pins. But will the PCU start up without load?

***PCU Delta-DPS-600NB (from HP workstation xw8200)*** it was powering up two Xeon processors so is it possible that my 8 pin plug is simply 2 ATX's in one or am I wrong again.

Thanks
LL

Welcome to the forum.

8-Pin ATX is a std for dual CPU MBs and also some of the later MBs which require a higher current supply - such as the DFI Expert.

Pending the SPecs of the PSU, there are adaptors to use woth an 8-pin and extract the supply to a 4-Pin. Enermax provide such an adaptor with some of their PSUs.

But which half shall I plug in

I am going to power it up and see what is going to happen. I will try to find out which 2 out of 8 12V and will hope that 2 black once in the row are Ground.

Thats the mamma! The 8 pin is simply a pair of the 4 pin in a unique moldex when they have the yellow*x and black*x wires.
If you had a spare 4 pin moldex from a crapolled PS you could transfer them.

I can tell you which side you want because this MB has an 8 pin plug but accepts a 4 pin power if your PS don't have 8 pin.....in your pic at the top of this thread.....the 4 pins to the left are the ones you want...also if you'll notice...some of the pins are square and some are half moon shaped...cut it in half and only 1 will actually fit right.....the left side of your pic will be the 1...hope this helps...TY

Hi all,

I can proudly announce that it all working !!!

I put all the bits together and left a ATX unplugged and you know that happened??? it started spinning and flashing so i went in BIOS and because I have used my old Hard Drive with preloaded OS on it it asked my to register it so I assumed that it's perfectly good but as I said ATX is unplugged! May b I am wrong but I was thinking that ATX is powering Processor so no ATX no Spinning and no dancing?!?

I have tested all of my 8 pins and results are:
- all whites +12.1V
- all blacks G
so I have a BIG smile on my face
I asked my self do I need to chop it to 2 x 4 or ???
I left it as it is. It fits only one way.

Thanks for your help

I was trying to attach a pic but my attachment button is disabled? Why?
